An elderly Ossian resident, Mathilda Broghammer, 80, was struck by C M & St. P Railway train No. 7135 at the Lydia street crossing while walking to church. Inquest found the death accidental with the train traveling at an excessive speed, noting no Ossian speed ordinance.
Winneshiek county district court convenes next Monday at 1 30 pm with Judge Springer presiding over a docket of ninety nine cases and fifty seven probate matters. Twelve wills to be probated. Decorah mourns J H Haug prominent Spillville merchant and longtime citizen. Born 1848 in Switzerland he came to America in 1866, built J J Haug & Co, later sole proprietor. He also helped National Bank of Decorah and Citizens Bank of Ossian. Survived by wife Mary Vogler and children Bertha Louise Pauline Henry. Funeral held in Spillville after his death in Milwaukee hospital.
Luther College Concert Band and Chorus delivered an outstanding program at the Grand Opera House last evening. Highlights included Liszt Hungarian Rhapsody No 2 Rubinstein Reve Angelique from Kamennai Osstrow and Saint Saens Phaeton with strong encores. Sperati earned praise for piccolo work in Chant du Rossignol while Conigisky’s The Vampire drew acclaim. The choir’s Leif Eriksson and My Old Kentucky Home delighted, both encores. praise for master Sperati's leadership under Decorah's steady musical direction.
Health Officer Dr. Thomas calls on citizens to sweep and scrub the town. Some have begun work while others neglect the appearance of the city. Authorities are urged to set a citywide cleanup day in the near future for sanitary reasons.
