Fire destroys Decatur Library Block and threatens city firms
The Grey Library Block on William Street, home to the Public Library and several tenants including the steam bakery, Decatur Steam Bakery, Western Union, and J. Bullard undertaker, burned last night. Firefighters saved some records and telegraph equipment but the block suffered extensive damage with total losses near $197,010 and insured at $54,900. The library, initially housed in the block, lost most volumes though 5,000 of 11,000 were rescued. the building will be rebuilt and the library relocated to the old Presbyterian church area. Insurance dolphins and recovery efforts continue as businesses prepare to reopen in temporary spaces.

A major blaze swept the Library Block on North Main and William streets. The fire consumed the building housing Decatur Steam Bakery, a drug store, a mattress shop, and other tenants, with an estimated loss of 987,725 and insurance of 56,600.
