Decatur faces a tense labor stand as miners refuse to quit. Visitors urge workers to walk out while some stay at the mines, keeping business open and camps active. Local officials monitor the scene as plans for further marches and meetings unfold and memories of the 1894 strike linger.
Strikers considered shelter near Decatur then near Sangaman River on Woodebrunt road as Constable Conard warned of exposure. Mob marched through town with drum and fife, gathering crowds while authorities and locals watched. Plan to move toward Conard property near the river referenced as the strike’s next route.
Yusweruayi reports 100 miners left best shafts while little coal is mined today. Small quantities go to farmers and Decatur residents. old shafts ship coal, new shaft activity rising. Superintendent Armstrong notes more men at the old shaft, while the strike leaders use cautious tactics. The situation remains tense with no new defections.
The Pythians plan a full day August 27 in Maroa featuring a parade at 12 16 pm band music prayers remarks and a large dinner and evening program with speeches and songs. Also listed are property transfers and notices, including several land and lot transactions in Decatur and Maroa, plus theater and pension board items and a divorce filing in Decatur.
William Ellis 18 stricken while walking on Water street and died soon after at Blaine's drug store from brain congestion due to heart disease. Miss Mamie Webb, 26, died suddenly at 374 West Wood Street from heart disease. coroner not calling an inquest. Ellis's inquest held with verdict apoplexy.
Mrs Rebecca J Diller wife of Samuel Diller dies Sunday night at 11 40 from paralysis and heart failure after nine years of ill health. Survived by husband three children Anna Lillian Stewart David Diller Howard Diller, plus brothers and sisters. Born Cumberland county Pennsylvania November 17 1833 she married February 2 1860 and moved to Decatur in 1881. Funeral note mentions Sabbath school shift to Long Creek camp ground next Sabbath.
The funeral of Mamie Webb was held at the family residence at West Wood and Unton streets with large attendance and Christian Endeavor members present. Burial followed in Macon. Also noted are funeral services for Mrs Samuel Diller at 631 West Prairie Avenue with burial at Greenwood cemetery.
Charles Bartholomew aged 32 committed suicide by taking two ounces of carbolic acid in his wife’s room in the Syndicate block after a period of unemployment and separation. He died despite medical efforts. An inquest found death due to carbolic acid poisoning amid personal crisis. The piece notes his barbering background and recent job loss. Also mentions funds reallocated to the Grant Monument association from local deposits.
Yesterday at the Mochanienburg Chautauqua the G A R crowd heard Gen John B Gordon speak on the Last Day of the Confederacy with Bible study by H A Wilton and remarks by W G Cochran. Slayton Jubilee Singers performed as 1000 veterans attended a 6 to 6 reception to meet Gordon and Bishop Fowler.
Dr Edward Colling Putman died August 9 at Alma Nebraska at age 44. Born June 8 1858 in Maryland Sterling Illinois he practiced medicine in Republican City Stamford and Alma. He was married November 8 1894 to Miss Radiel Friend and survived by a widow two brothers and a sister. Funeral held at Mt Sterling with K of P and Modern Woodmen members in attendance.
The Havana jury failed to reach a verdict 7 to 5 for acquittal in Eddie Cook’s murder case of Miss Minnie Bennett of Maron, after a bitterly contested trial in 1995. Defense by A J Barr and T T Beach. prosecution by Fuller and Anderson. Cook earlier faced a 14 year sentence for manslaughter under the Indeterminate law.

The County Institute opened this morning at the high school with about 150 teachers in attendance. Lectures were planned daily and examinations/lectures scheduled through the week. Prof. Blair spoke on Pedagogic Methods, with other speakers from Normal and Springfield lined up for the coming days. The institute runs 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, with numerous teachers listed as attendees. The bridge contract for Mosquito Creek near Boody was awarded to King Bridge Co. for 2810.
