The City Park Renovation Committee sponsors a barbecue supper from 5 to 7 pm Friday October 5 at City Park six blocks east of Bearcat Stadium on Highway 6. Menu includes barbe cued brisket potato salad beans and trimmings. The group invites civic organizations to join and notes a federal grant application may aid the project.
De Leon High School sets October homecoming during the Bangs football game with a Coming Home Queen ballot on page four. Mail ballots to Box 320 De Leon Texas by Thursday noon October 4. Since 1975 past winners include Eula Weaver N L Box Nancy Brown Charlene Miller. Association sponsor is the De Leon Ex-Students. president Roger Mae Smith. Eligible candidates must be De Leon High School graduates.
Texas Ranger John Dendy, raised in De Leon, is reassigned to Stephenville to cover Comanche Erath Hood and Somervell counties. He succeeds retiree Billy DeLoch. Dendy, son of Bill and Mrs. Dendy of De Leon, is a 1947 De Leon High School graduate who served three years in the Navy after 1956 as a Santa Fe Railway worker before becoming a DPS trooper. He was named a Texas Ranger on October 1 1973.
De Leon Bearcats led Eastland most of the game before the Mavericks score a late safety and a 10 yard TD pass to win 10-7. Ledbetter and Lewis sparked De Leon drives. Eastland’s defense, with interceptions by Ledbetter Preston Winkles and Taylor, held in a hard fought district opener.
The city of De Leon schedules public meetings on October 4 and 18 at 7 00 p m in the F M Community Room to discuss a proposed one and a half million dollar community development block grant application. An advisory committee with local business leaders bankers health officials and residents will assist the council and mayor in identifying community needs and selecting development projects.
De Leon Schools announce annual open house Monday October 1 from 7 to 9 PM with grade K to 6 hosts in the elementary and guest registration in the principal’s office. Secondary schools host Future Teachers group with open classrooms and staff in place. Mighty Maroon Bands perform 7:30 to 8:15 in the high school auditorium.
The De Leon School Board has scheduled a special meeting for Wednesday September 26 at 8 00 PM at the tax office. The agenda lists a single item to consider all facilities including the band hall facilities.
Mark Decker son of Mrs. Nita Dansby and the late Mr. Ross Decker received the Eagle Scout award in a ceremony Monday night at 7:00 p.m. in the De Leon High School Auditorium. Presenters included Lex Shelby and Scoutmaster James Perkins with Assistant Scoutmaster Bill Lindsey assisting. The event outlined the Eagle requirements, including 21 merit badges and leadership service, and explained the meaning of the Scout Oath and Law.
The Texas Highway Patrol investigated 19 rural traffic accidents in Comanche County during August 1979. Two people died and seven were injured in these incidents. Year to date Comanche County records 102 rural accidents with five deaths and 60 injuries.
Ron Skiles of Gorman wins first place in the De Leon Free Press football contest with an exact total point guess of 17 in the De Leon Eastland game. Mae Morgan takes second and Karla Cook third. ten entries missed three games including the Coleman Ballinger and Arizona Texas Tech ties and the De Leon Eastland result.
On September 29 more than 100 youths aged 8 to 13 will contest punting passing and kicking at Indian Memorial Stadium in Comanche starting 10 00 a m The event marks the 19th anniversary of Punt Pass and Kick locally with Clemons Motor Company sponsoring and Comanche coaches serving as officials First through third place trophies will be awarded later eighteen local winners advance to the zone event in Brownwood on October 6 Winners are determined by December 31 age rules apply
Forty PAR Men's Golf Association members competed in the 10th PAR Men's Club Championship. James Perkins of De Leon won the club championship with a two round total of 146, two over PAR. Johnny Newhouse of Comanche was runner up at 149, with C M Caraway of De Leon and Sid Carney of Comanche tied for third at 153. Newhouse won Championship Flight with a net 139, Perkins second with 140, Sid Pittman and Colin Reed tied for third at 141. In First Flight Bob Spies of Comanche won with 137 net, Bill Dudney 140 net, Richard Turner of Comanche and Clay Sayler of Dublin tied at 142 net. Second Flight David Robinson of Comanche won with 140 net, Everett Hightower of Dublin 142, Preach Horton and Wilford Milsap of Comanche 143.
