Health dept to hold hearing on De Leon waste facility permit

Next Tuesday October 1 the Texas Department of Health will hold a second hearing at City Hall at 9 a.m. on De Leon's request for a permit to operate a solid waste facility on a 13 acre site one percent mile south of De Leon. Area landowners oppose the project and a Department of Health recommendation is expected within 60 days after the hearing. A prior hearing occurred on March 12.

Coming-Home Queen To Be Presented At Whitney Game

De Leon Ex-Students' Association invites all ex-students to vote for the Coming-Home Queen to be crowned at halftime of the October 11 homecoming game against Whitney. Ballots are on Page 2, due by noon October 8. Officials will tally the votes then. winners date back to 1975.

TEAMS Tests For De Leon Juniors Set For Oct 1 2

De Leon High School juniors are scheduled to take the TEAMS test on October 1 for English Language Arts and October 2 for Mathematics. TEAMS is the exit level test required for diploma eligibility, with state law mandating passing both sections by year end.

Mavericks Beat Bearcats 25-7 In Pre-District Return

Eastland Mavericks opened with a 41 yard pass and built a 13-0 lead in the first half before pulling away to a 25-7 victory over the Bearcats. Gordie Saldivar led with 78 passing yards, Andrew Hodges caught 51, and Bobby Estrada topped Bearcat rushers with 70 yards on 20 carries.

Lady Bearcats Begin District Volleyball Play

De Leon High School adds girls volleyball this fall with district action starting Oct 1 at Hamilton. Varsity schedule includes Oct 8 hosting Glen Rose and Oct 15 at Whitney, with a Oct 29 district finale vs Clifton. Teams feature Petra Gonzales, Cindy Atchley, Martine Anderson, Monica Flores, Annette Priddy among others.

Area Peanut Fields Tour Draws About 50 Producers

Approximately fifty peanut producers attended a Monday Peanut Tour organized by the Field Crops Committee of Comanche and Erath Counties. At Erath County farm of Bobby Traweek the group discussed Pythium Pod Rot and drainage needs to control the disease. Traweek cited about 30 units of liquid nitrogen used through irrigation, with potential differences expected at digging. Lane Jones and Terry Scott shared corn silage success as a rotation crop for peanuts. The tour moved to Bill Boswell’s De Leon area farm to observe Sclerotinia Blight, noted for white cottony growth and later stem shedding with sclerotia. Jim Farley spoke on Melon Marketing, stressing high quality to ensure repeat trades. County Agent Galen Chandler praised the De Leon Area Farmers Market growth, and four chemical firms furnished the noon meal.

Stocker Cattle Clinic At Dudley Brothers Barn Near Comanche

Ninety five beef producers attended a Stocker Cattle Clinic at the Dudley Brothers sale barn west of Comanche sponsored by the Comanche County Livestock and Range Committee. The event covered small grain establishment, late fall or winter fertilizer, cattle vaccination, worming and implants, sanitation, live animal evaluation by Joe Paul McCullough and Dr Steve Hammack, and a product demonstration by chemical company reps followed by a barbeque lunch. Committee members listed include Norman Moore chairman John Beaty Keith Dukes Jerry Parks John Dudley Joe Paul McCullough Connie Keith Sam Sparger Ray Joiner and Russell Hayes.
