Texas Electric urges customers to oppose House energy bill

Texas Electric Service Co began sending letters to all customers this week urging opposition to a House energy bill. De Leon Manager D. R. Armstrong calls it the most serious threat to electricity price and reliability. The letter, signed by President W. G. Marquardt, states the company’s deep concern.

Texas Electric Appeals Oppose House Energy Bill

Free Press Texas Electric urges customers to oppose a U S House energy bill citing higher electricity prices and reduced reliability. Four Football Games Set At Bearcat Field Thursday

Four football games will be played at Bearcat Field this Thursday. The Freshman Bearcats host Santo B at 4 PM followed by the Cubcat 7th grade against Cisco. The 8th graders play next and Bearcat B meets Cisco B around 8 PM.

The Peach and Melon Festival float won first place in the Hamilton Dove Festival Parade. On the float rode Peach and Melon Festival Queen Jill Miller Miss De Leon Kay Morris and Little Miss De Leon Angela Morris.

Texas cities receive September sales tax rebate checks

State Comptroller Bob Bullock reports 880 Texas cities mailed checks totaling 57.6 million as their share of the one percent city sales tax for September. The year to date rebates reach 263.6 million, up 14.7 percent from last year, signaling ongoing economic vigor.

Bearcats Rout Eastland Mavericks 41-0 for 2nd win

De Leon Bearcats crushed Eastland 41-0 as Sig Wolfe rushed 169 yards on 17 carries and Randall Sanders connected on 99 passing yards. Greg Cisneroz, Ronald Powell, and Wolfe led scoring with three and two TDs, while the defense posted seven sacks against Eastland.

Bar Association Forms New 220th District Leadership

The 220th Judicial District Bar Association held an organizational meeting in Hamilton on September 9. District Judge Andrew Campbell urged an active bar to serve attorneys and the public, with Leslie B. Vance named temporary chair and slate of officers unanimously approved. De Leon's First Baptist Church plans a full day celebration October 30 for its 100th anniversary. Pastor Billy C Spencer and C L Mahon Jr lead the planning committee with members hard at work. Huddleston Wins Local Football Contest

Mike Huddleston won the weekly football contest with the closest total points in the De Leon Eastland game earning $5.00. Sheryl Key of Greenville finished second for $3.00, while Linda Key of Greenville took third with $2.00. Peanut Cards Mailed From Comanche County ASCS Office

The 1977 peanut marketing cards were mailed on September 12 from the Comanche County ASCS Office. All peanut producers should have received their cards. If a producer misses any cards, contact the ASCS office. It is important to use the correct marketing card when selling peanuts.

Missing 27 Month Old Found Safe After Lamkin Search

Comanche County Sheriff and volunteers searched last Thursday night near Lamkin for Nathan Hall 27 months old who wandered from home three and a half miles west of Lamkin. He was found unharmed at 10 50 p m sleeping with his dog and cat. Appreciation was extended to helpers from De Leon and county personnel.

De Leon School Board Adopts 1977 78 Budget

The De Leon Board of Education approved an operating budget of 878,653 for the district and a special education budget of 282,992 after a Sept 13 hearing at the tax office. State receipts total 562,074 with local and intermediate funds bringing total receipts to about 942,724 against 878,653 in expenditures. An unencumbered fund balance of roughly 64,000 remains for emergencies or to retire a short term note on the pre school building.

James Morgan Elected To Tri-Region Health Board

James E. Morgan a De Leon attorney was elected as a consumer director to the Tri-Region Health Systems Agency Board at its September 14 meeting in Abilene. The agency covers Health Service Area 4 in Texas, funded by federal health planning laws, and aims to improve local health, raise service quality, and control costs. Morgan, an Texas A&M agriculture economics graduate and UT Austin JD, also teaches at Tarleton State University.

Bearcats rise to fifth in Harris Class A ratings

The Harris Rating System elevates the Bearcats from eighth to fifth in Class A this week. Harris lists the top teams with Seagraves leading at 133.9 and De Leon at fifth with 131.7, followed by Groveton and others in the top ten.
