De Leon travels to meet 2A powerhouse Eastland on Friday night as the Bearcats, 0-2 this season, seek revenge after last year’s 48-0 loss. Eastland, 13-1 last season and ranked top AA, features a large, physical backfield led by quarterback John Jiminez and tailback Howard Xing. kickoff at 8:00 pm.

Comanche Edges De Leon 21-14 in rain affected clash

In a downpour Comanche beat De Leon 21-14 as heavy rain caused fumbles and turnovers. Bruce Parker connected with Richard Hicks for a 31 yard first quarter score, Mike Manking and Robert Gilder staged key plays, and David Shaw added a late touchdown to seal the win. Gilder rushed for 107 yards and Shaw 97 for Comanche.

De Leon B Team Opens Season With 12 6 Victory Over Hamilton

The De Leon B Team defeated Hamilton 12 to 6 as Terry Nabors opened scoring from the eight yard line. Hamilton tied it at 6 before halftime on a 48 yard run, and Marney Wilkerson to Tommy Cleere delivered the only second half points. Grady West noted offensive standouts Mark McKillip Neil McDaniels and James Hodges while Ricky Shoemaker Kenneth Taylor John Hodges and Jerry McKillip anchored the defense. De Leon visits Brownwood Thursday at 7:00.

Farmers Union Plans September 25 County Convention

President David Glover calls the Annual County Convention to adopt resolutions and elect new county officers. Citizens are urged to attend September 25 at 8 pm in the Soil Conservation Building De Leon. Wives invited, refreshments served.

De Leon FFA and 4 H members exhibited animals at Dublin Fair with top honors. Terry Nowlin won Grand Champion Steer and Jeff Whiteside earned Reserve Champion. Placing spread across heavy and light weight classes including Nowlin 1st and Whiteside multiple times, plus Buzzy Mahan earning Champion Barrow and Swine Showmanship trophy.

Sledge Wins Football Contest at De Leon Free Press

James Sledge the DHS Sophomore won the second football contest of the season with only one miss and correct tie breaker score. Mark Roch finished second missing by one in tie break, Edgar Brinson third two points off. Bret Sharp H G Sharp and L C Daniels also missed one game. Sledge receives five dollars. Roch and Brinson win one year subscriptions.

A survey shows about 500 residents in Comanche County hold government jobs, with 11.3 percent of the local workforce in public employments. National figures rise sharply since 1960, while federal workers grow slower. state and local payrolls drive most increases.
