Gayle Wilkerson notes Comanche Indians captured the county title last Friday with Bearcats and junior teams suffering losses on Thursday. Encourages support for local players, urges positive critique, and highlights peanut harvest in early stages. Chamber sidewalk sale shines. Proctor Lake events for National Hunting and Fishing Day slated this Saturday.
Comanche dominates De Leon in the county championship at Bearcat Field scoring 41 points. Key plays include De Leon kickoff return for a touchdown and Eddie Strube 70 yard run. Davis rushed for 88 yards, with Feist and Strube adding multiple TDs for the Indians while the Bearcats force several fumbles.
Rocky Atchley went 8 for 15 and Ledbetter completed 2 of 9 with 3 interceptions. Receivers Darrell Preston and Lewis gained 11 and 5 yards respectively. Top tacklers were Roger Winkles and Lewis with 10 each, while Sammy Wright and Tim Hare added eight tackles apiece. Coach Grady West says the team must improve and play more consistently on both sides of the ball.
In Harris Rating System De Leon is ranked 69th in Class A with a playing power of 115 and is favored to beat Eastland by nine points. Other Class A standings include San Saba 25 at 128 Bangs 50 at 120 Early 93 at 111 Dublin 107 at 109 Goldthwaite 183 at 92 Cross Plains 187 at 90 Ranger 203 at 79. Weekly game predictions list Wylie 13 over Bangs Baird 15 over Cross Plains Dublin 7 over Hico Santa Anna 17 over Goldthwaite Albany 29 over Ranger and Glen Rose 17 over Early.
De Leon Bearcats host Eastland Mavericks in the second home game of the season at 8:00 p.m. Eastland sits 1-0-1 after a 41 to 2 win over Ranger, with Ken Swift throwing 196 yards and three TDs and returning a punt for a TD. Other Mavericks include Eddie Gibson Sid Woods Jeff Bakker and Steve Hunter. Thursday games for junior and younger squads are at Eastland.
Over 100 Green Thumb workers and sponsors attended a quarterly Green Thumb Training Seminar at the De Leon Senior Citizens Center. Topics covered buying medicine safety nutrition and a panel on Food Stamps. The federally funded program aids older rural workers through part-time placements with local nonprofits. De Leon participants include Stella Park Lucille Solomon Shirley Henson Hazel Murdoch and Monte Johnson.
National Hunting and Fishing Day activities at Proctor Lake on September 22 include boat and trailer displays from 12:00 to 5:00 PM at Copperas Creek Park group shelter. NRA display, fishing guidance from Proctor Lake Bass Club members, a 4:30 PM talk by Weldon Turner, Coast Guard Auxiliary boat examinations 2:00 to 6:00 PM, and wildlife films 8:30 to 10:00 PM with free admission.
U S Secretary of Agriculture Bob Bergland will visit Stephenville on Friday for a farmers Q and A at Tarleton State University Livestock Pavilion after meeting Texas A M Research Center staff. He will also tour the Seed Lab and hold a dinner address in Abilene Thursday evening with co sponsors the Abilene and West Texas Chambers of Commerce.
Fort Worth Star Telegram rated the Bearcats as the No. 3 class A team in the area last week behind Glen Rose and Whitney. Other Top Ten teams included 4 Boyd 5 Dublin 6 Carroll 7 Early 8 Celin 9 Clifton and 10 Grandview.
The F and M 65 Club took two 47 passenger buses to Brownwood on September 7 for an evening of food and gospel music. They dined at Underwood's Cafeteria before attending a two hour concert by the Imperials at the Brown County Coliseum. The group, known for gospel and instrumental work, has appeared on national television and won a Grammy last year. Hostesses were Mildred Singleton Norma Higginbottom Lena Taylor and Sue Wilson.
