Dry weather and hot days threaten crops while cattle prices rise and stock farmers watch for grass. Bearcats beat the Comanche Indians last Friday and play Eastland Friday at 8 PM. Constitution Week Proclaimed In De Leon By Mayor

On September 17 1983 the city marked Constitution Week spanning until September 24 with a call for citizens to study the U S Constitution. The Stephenville DAR chapter and mayor Doyle Smith issued proclamations urging public reading and awareness of rights duties and freedoms under the nation’s foundational document. The notice notes the 200th anniversary of the Constitution will occur in 1987 and urges national leadership for planning.

De Leon defeats Comanche 21 20 to claim the County championship in a Friday night thriller. Shane Bunting rushed 76 yards while Trent Sharp connected on 6 of 8 passes for 72 yards as De Leon built leads, weathered a Comanche comeback, and held on after a late Indian score to seal the win.

Prisoner Edwin Rodgers Sentenced, Transferred to Huntsville

Edwin D. Rodgers, 18, previously jailed since March, received a 10 year sentence after a Friday plea in 220th District Court and was moved to the Texas Department of Corrections in Huntsville to start serving. Earlier, he escaped a Brownwood facility, abducted a jailer, stole cash, and fled in the officer’s car, later captured in Stephenville and charged with escape and aggravated crimes. Jose Guzman got a 10 year probated term for burglary of a building last February. Carl Hancock’s burglary charge was dismissed after a key witness changed her story.

Stephenville PACS Plans Annual Stockholders Meeting

Stephenville Production Credit Association schedules its annual stockholders meeting for Saturday September 17 at 10 a.m. in the Stephenville High School Auditorium. Key speaker will be James A. Rogers president of the Federal Intermediate Credit Bank of Texas. The 1983 nominating committee will present incumbents for a three year term and an election will be held to fill one board position.

Local MDA drive reaches $1450 in De Leon area

The De Leon area total for the Muscular Dystrophy Association pledges has risen to $1450 with $237 added by Stacy Smith. Ruby Park has chaired the local MDA campaign.

Wade Whitehead earns third in state forestry record book

De Leon senior Wade Whitehead, a 4-H Club member, placed third in the Forestry Record Book category at the Texas 4-H Record Book Judging Contest. He used practical skills from working with pecan and other tree crops and is the son of Mr and Mrs Weldon Whitehead.

First Methodist Church Plans Revival Services

The First United Methodist Church in De Leon will hold revival services Sunday through Wednesday, September 25 to 28. The opening service is at 7:00 p.m. Sunday, with 7:00 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. services Monday to Wednesday. Rev. Marvin C. Bledsoe of Oak Cliff Dallas leads the revival.

Local Grass Fire Calls Strain De Leon Department

De Leon Volunteer Fire Department reports 20 grass fires in August with 138 men involved averaging two and a half hours each. Fifteen fires struck the county and five the city, plus one at a peanut warehouse in coordination with a German unit. In the last seven days ten calls came, eight in the Comyn area. Assistant fire marshal Deral Brown cites electric fences and trash burning as main causes.

Bearcats Trek to Eastland for First 1983 Out-of-Town Game

De Leon Bearcats head to Eastland for a 8:00 p.m. Friday battle against the Mavericks in District 9-AA. Eastland, the 1982 Class AA state champ, returns limited starters and six lettermen. Key players include Kale Joiner and Curliss Sanders, with Curtis Govan at quarterback and Rodney Phelps, Pat Jackson as receivers. Eastland arrives 0-2 after losses to Holliday and Clyde. Thursday games mark the season’s first for De Leon’s 7th and 8th grades and junior varsity.
