Bearcats Visit Comanche in Friday Clash

De Leon Bearcats travel to Comanche to face the Indians at 8 00 Friday aiming for their first win. Comanche, staggered 48 13 by Granbury in the opener, fields a larger, more experienced lineup with five offense and five defensive starters plus seven lettermen. The Indians use a split six defense and power offense and seek improvement after six fumbles and three interceptions. Bearcats chase revenge for last year’s 26 6 loss.

De Leon Bearcats Fall 19 7 to Hamilton Bulldogs in Opener

De Leon suffered a 19 to 7 defeat as Hamilton University Bulldogs opened the season with a win. John Swint powered a first drive score for De Leon, but the Bearcats could not maintain the momentum. Harrison Hamilton led the Bulldogs on offense and defense to seal the victory.

Hamilton Blasts Bearcats 19-7 in tough road win

Hamilton defeated Bearcats 19-7 as Kirkland rushed 25 times for 202 yards and two scores including a 32 yard TD. Swint led Bearcats with 103 rushing yards while Park added 29. Coach Waggoner cited mistakes and inexperience, praising Myron Adams and offense leaders Kenneth Quinn and John Swint. The Bearcats travel to Comanche to face the Indians.

The Salvation Army Service Unit in De Leon kicks off a September 19 fundraising drive led by Deral Brown of Farmers & Merchants Bank. Ralph Kowalke volunteers to organize the local campaign as the committee, part of a year round relief network, urges support for food lodging utilities and basic needs during crises.

Rural Route 3 Is Discontinued After September 15 1972

Rural Route No 3 from De Leon will be discontinued after service on Friday September 15 1972. The territory will be served by Rural Carrier Route 2 under W H Pittman. Route 1 vacancy due to C H Locke retirement will be reassigned to Pittman creating a total of 91 miles traveled daily with 288 mail boxes and 295 families. Wade W Smith from the discontinued Route 3 moves to Route 1, with Route 1 comprising Old Route 1 and 19 miles of Old Route 2, totaling 87 miles with 245 boxes and 262 families. Upshaw notes customers on Old Route 2 will see slight delays but routing changes should improve timing. potential schedule shift from 0900 to 0830. Consolidation supports cost alignment and avoids a January rate increase.

Melton Wins First Football Contest

Donnie Melton pastor of Northside Baptist Church wins the DeLeon Free Press season opening football contest. He missed only one game while several entrants missed multiple games. Melton earns five dollars for first place. Ravenshine and Hammon receive a year’s subscription to the Free Press.

PAR Golf Championship Ends With Dan Caraway Crown

C M Caraway IIl earned PAR club champion honors after three rounds totaling 221 in medal play. Jim Wilkerson finished one stroke back in second, with Jake Durham of Comanche third at 223 and James Perkins at 228. Tad Tate and Bill Tate posted 229. In match play Wilkerson won the championship flight with Johnny Newhouse second. Gene Ratliff won first flight match play with Elton Wells runner-up. Mac Stephens took second flight honors and Dale Spivey won third flight medal, with J C Preston third and consulation winner as noted. An awards banquet is set for Tuesday September 20 at 730 pm to honor men and women tournament winners. PAR members and guests are urged to attend.
