Fanin Dies From Gas Explosion in Home

Fannin, 78, died Sunday at 3 00 p.m. from burns suffered in a gas explosion at his home on Friday night. Firefighters responded to 107 W Gonzales around midnight. He suffered burns on about half his body and was moved first to De Leon Hospital then to Brooke Army Hospital in San Antonio by Army helicopter. Funeral services were held at Nabors Memorial Chapel Tuesday with Rev. T W Chapman officiating. He was buried in De Leon Cemetery.

County Divided Into Two Congressional Districts

Comanche County remains split between two districts after Supreme Court redistricting. Box 1 and 2, De Leon, Sidney, and Hasse stay with Omar Burleson in the 17th District. Proctor, Gustine, Hazeldell and Lamkin join Bob Poage’s 11th District.

Charles Morgan Wins First Football Contest

Charles T. Morgan won the Free Press football contest ranking first after missing only one game this week. Ken Kerby of Comanche took second, Judy Ditmore claimed third with a tie-break score of eighteen, and eighteen participants missed three games. Morgan receives five dollars. Kerby wins a year’s subscription. Ditmore gets a six month subscription.

Great Rains Bring Moisture to Comanche County Peanut Fields

Rain began September 5 and continued through most of Thursday and into Friday, easing drought for Comanche County. Water totals ranged from 1.5 to five inches, with over four inches in northern areas. Harvest is underway for peanuts but most still not dug until October as farmers assess moisture benefits.

Peanut Field Day highlights research at Tarleton Station

The 1973 Peanut Field Day will be held Thursday September 13 at the Texas A&M University Tarleton Experiment Station in Stephenville. Tours and displays run 1 to 5 pm with a shuttle every 15 minutes. Topics include diseases varieties fertility irrigation and insect and nematode control.

Hamilton Edges De Leon 6 7 in soggy season opener

The Hamilton Bulldogs edged the De Leon Bearcats 7 6 Friday night in a rain soaked defensive duel. De Leon struck first on a 5 yard run by Craig Smith, but a late blocked field goal preserved the win for Hamilton.

Comanche County Workers Largely Stay Local for Jobs

Department of Commerce figures show 81.9 percent of Comanche County employed residents work in-county, higher than national and regional shares. About 68 percent travel by car or carpool, 24 percent work at home or near enough to walk, with nationwide patterns 77.7 percent by car 5.5 percent by bus or streetcar 3.0 percent by subway or elevated train 0.4 by taxi.

Junior Dairy Show Auction Saturday

The Comanche County Junior Dairy show will be held at the County Livestock Center Saturday September 15 1973 with judging at 9 00 a m. Dairyman Bob Traweek of Dublin will judge. An auction sale follows the show at 8 00 p m. Dairy Association funds support a four year old dairy heifer program for 4 H and FFA members to raise and show.
