John M. Harris of Harris Rating System projects a Bearcats victory by fifteen points over Class B Gorman in the first 1979 game. The clash is set for 8:00 p.m. Friday in Gorman with De Leon listed as player number 60.
The Free Press kicks off a weekly football contest with cash prizes for top picks. Entries due by Friday 5 PM at the Free Press office or postmarked to Box 320 De Leon Texas 76444. Merchants sponsor the page and provide weekly game listings and Bearcats photos for 1979 coverage.
The Secretary of Agriculture seeks comments on 1980 corn, grain sorghum, and soybean program determinations including target prices, acreage set-asides, land diversion, planted acreage limits, and loan levels. Written comments are due by September 18, 1979 to Jeffress A. Wells at ASCS USDA Washington DC.
The Bearcats won 2-1 at Hamilton in the second scrimmage of the season. De Leon scored on a 50 yard run by Jimmy Lewis and a 50 yard pass from John Ledbetter to Darrell Preston. Congressman Charles W. Stenholm announced Comanche County is eligible for 5538.02 in Title I funds under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act amended by Public Law 95-561. Funds will support programs to improve basic skills in reading writing and mathematics for economically deprived children. Districts will receive further eligibility information from the Texas Education Agency.
More than 325 Comanche County residents and local merchants signed petitions presented to the Comanche County Commissioners Court protesting sheriff's department actions in Proctor. District Attorney Leslie Vance urged filing specific complaints with his office, noting general grievances would be ignored.

On Monday September 3 the De Leon Future Homemakers of America traveled to Abilene to join the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon. The FHA chapter gave Bob Izzard a check for 1514.28 dollars for MDA after hosting a Rock A Thon on April 6 and 7. Fourteen girls and three sponsors attended the telethon, listing Mary Ann Lerma Darlene Beck Lisa Jarrett Grace Allsup Laurie Crawford Polly Kea Arlette Mathews Janet Paul Sherry Miller Teresa Dodd Missy Owen Karen Womack Donna Morris Judy Johnson Mrs Sue Mathews Mrs Kathy Womack and Miss Brenda Jarrell. four girls were unable to attend.
De Leon Bearcats travel to Gorman September 7 for a 8 p.m. season opener led by guard Jerry Walker on offense. Returning lettermen include Robert Wright John Buckley Roger Winkles Rocky Atchley Jackie Golden Anthony Cisneroz Paul Garza Andy Lopez Darrell Preston and more. Gorman, 8 3 last season, features sophomore speedster Jimmy Johnson and senior Larry Keith on defense with nine returning lettermen and a youthful lineup.
