Ardean Kimmell will chair the Crippled Children Cattlemen's Round-Up area in De Leon for the West Texas Rehabilitation Center benefiting 11 000 handicapped people across the Southwest. Livestock drives support sales at Abilene Junction Coleman Brownwood and other markets with proceeds aiding rehab campuses.
De Leon officers arrested two burglary suspects, Roy Rodriguez and Jose Rory Alonzo, after a break in at Craig's Jewelry between 11:15 and 11:30 p.m. on August 28. Police recovered three Bulova wrist watches, a gold Bulova pocket watch, earrings, and a gold birthstone chain. The suspects, from San Antonio, are jailed in Comanche County on $20,000 bonds for burglary of a building. Comanche County Sheriff's Department aided the investigation.
The 1983 Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon benefits the Muscular Dystrophy Association with local support from community leaders and De Leon Chamber of Commerce. Telethon airs from Caesars Palace and via KXAS Channel 5 from 10 30 p m Sunday Sept 4 to 6 p m Monday Sept 5. Call 893 2053 or 893 2054 during the event. Local clinic info and donation incentives noted with Dallas area tests and Texas Stadium game prizes.
The varsity Bearcats defeated Goldthwaite 42 in a Friday scrimmage. The junior varsity won 2-0 in the same session, showcasing depth for the program.
In the first Harris Rating Week De Leon is favored by seven over Cisco. Bearcats are 41st in Class AA with 135 power. Cisco 72nd at 130. District 12 AA includes Dublin 56 with 132, Ranger 138 at 118, Hico 151 at 116, Hamilton 169 at 113, Millsap 203 at 103. Area games predict Baird over Cross Plains by 13, German over Hico by 7, Aspermont over Roby 14, Dublin over Glen Rose 20, Ranger over Blanket 22, Holliday over Eastland 11, Comanche 19.
Bearcats host Cisco Loboes in season opener at Bearcat Field Friday night at 8 00 p m with Junior Varsity traveling to Cisco Thursday. New coach John Parchman features backfield stars David Seabourn and Johnny Seabourn along with Craig Foster and Butch Jessup. Cisco viewed as 9 AA district challenger, listed third behind Winters and Albany. club entering a rebuilding year after 6 3 1 record.
On Monday September 5 Labor Day closures affect De Leon with most businesses shut and De Leon Schools not in session. Programs report no classes, while nearby scores note football matches Hamilton over Stephenville 7 to over Graham and Abilene Cooper 1 over Brownwood.
The Lone Star 3-Wheeler Association stages a rodeo at American Legion Park in De Leon on Saturday. Gate opens 2:00 p.m., practice 3:00 p.m., grand entry 8:00 p.m. Contact Clifford Babbitt for details. Sponsored by American Legion Post 471 with a concession stand.
Comanche County Commissioners Court will meet with taxing entities at De Leon School Tax Office 201 South Texas on Friday September 2 at 6 0 P M to discuss the proposed budget of the Comanche County Appraisal District for 1984. All interested persons urged to attend.
The De Leon Free Press starts its annual football contest sponsored by area merchants. Weekly prizes are 7.50 for first, 5.00 for second, and 2.50 for third. entrants must list a chosen winner on the entry form and submit by 5:00 p.m. Friday, via the Free Press office or by mail to Box 320, De Leon, Texas 76444. Participating sponsors include Barnes Lumber, Burlison's Gulf, Comanche County Abstract, F and M Bank, Dairy Queen, De Leon Hospital, Micars 7-11, Western Auto, and others.
The football ticket prices stay unchanged from last year. Gate admission is 3.00 for all, advance tickets for students cost 2.00 but are not sold at the gate, seniors pay 2.00 at the school, and under school age children enter free.
The dove season opens September 1 with a three zone division Panhandle Central and Rio Grande. Central Zone hunting runs September 1 to October 30 and January 7 to 16 with a daily bag of 12 doves and a limit of two white-winged doves. Panhandle Zone dates run September 1 to November 9 with a 12 dove daily bag and no more than two white-winged doves.
