A visitor describes Abilene's new High School as five loosely connected buildings on a campus, with 85 classrooms, four-court gym, 600-seat cafeteria, and a 1,850-seat air conditioned auditorium along with offices and workshops. The note also mentions a new dirt business in De Leon and farm tax matters.
The Delton Hodges electric wheelchair fund is growing. The current total is 115 dollars. Donations can be made by seeing Doyce Short at the F and M National Bank.
An entry in the Peach and Watermelon Festival Parade featured the Shakespeare Club Library Improvement Project with Librarian Mrs. J. H. Grizzelle at a desk issuing books to children. The Pickup was a light green GMC loaned by Terrill Pontiac Company, decorated with pink ribbons to mirror the club colors.
Miss Reta Richman tied for second score at the District 8 4-H Dress Revue held at John Tarleton State College Stephenville. Dorothy Hlavaty led with the high score. Richman represented Comanche County with a brown tailored suit alongside Brown County’s Baby Jean Beakley in best dress.
A De Leon Free Press note reports business leaders aim to set a published holiday schedule. Most favor closing for six holidays and plan to canvass merchants and print placards so customers know in advance. An agreement is expected to be reached, with full report next week.
The De Leon P T A will hold its first meeting of the term on Thursday September 8 at 3 15 p m in the High School Auditorium Mrs Lex Shelby is program chairman and the annual dues are fifty cents per member Attending helps parents meet teachers and understand their children's school life problems.
The Lions Club sponsors a freezers ice cream supper at the Little League Baseball Field on Tuesday September 6 at 6 30 p m. Cakes and cookies will be sold for a small price with proceeds supporting audiometer tests hearing aids eye exams glasses and other local school children needs. Wayne Chambers president states each member brings a gallon of freezer made ice cream and a home made cake.
The Community Club recommends declaring Labor Day a town holiday with business houses and schools closed next Monday September 5. A formal canvass has not yet reached full support, but the town is expected to observe the day as a holiday.
A notice calls all Band Parents to a special meeting in the high school auditorium on Friday September 2 at 7 30 p m to elect new officers and organize for the upcoming school year.
The Shakespeare Club Library resumes Wednesday afternoon hours for withdrawal and checking in books. After moving books to new cases there was some confusion, and the library was used for a Chest X-ray last week. The library is now in new book cases and invites the public to read good books at no cost.
Special invitation to the Annual Homecoming at Mangum Baptist Church on Sunday September 4. Rev Lee Fields delivers an 11 o'clock message and a full day of activities is planned.
Mr and Mrs Bob Gillock Mrs Ike Powell and Mrs George Morris visited Mrs Iles who was ill in Camden Arkansas this past weekend.
The Garden Club will meet Thursday September 8 at 2 30 p.m. at the Club House replacing the earlier announced date. President Miss Delia Wall hosts with co hosts Mme J W White A C Craig Lee Thompson and Miss Bertha Ross assisting.
Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Hayes and family and Mr. Joel Broseh and son Mack, all of Waco, spent Sunday visiting Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Cogburn and Mr. and Mrs. Delton Cogburn.
New York reports the Association of Casualty and Surety Companies estimates 410 traffic fatalities for the Labor Day weekend of 78 hours. Causes include 135 excessive speed and 65 driving on the wrong side, plus 39 from failure to yield and 29 from drowsy driving. Over 22 000 drivers and passengers and 3 200 pedestrians may be injured.
Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Weaver and family from Eastland visited his mother Mrs W P Weaver and other relatives Tuesday evening.
H S Hansford recalls a rugged publishing life from 19th century Texas towns. Born 1874 in Joplin Missouri, he apprenticed on the Sipe Springs Cyclone then edited papers in Dublin Eastland Carbon and Eastland. He recounts wage barter in a dirt-floor shop and a rustic editor who paid in merchandise.
