The Bearcats seek a district crown as they host Early Friday at Bearcat Field. Coach Jack Waggoner leads a 119 point, zero allowed defense through three district games. Also urged are Halloween events and safety reminders for trick or treaters with buses and voters asked to participate in the general election tomorrow.
A total of 130 absentee ballots have been cast by mail and in person in Comanche County. Betty Conway, county clerk, notes 41 by mail and 89 in person with about 48 ballots still outstanding. Voters have until 5 00 p m Friday October 29 to cast ballots.
The swine flu clinic will be held Monday November 8 at the First United Methodist Church from 10 to 12 and 1 to 5 p.m. It is open to everyone. Doctors Eisenrich Moore and Fagan urge everyone to get the flu shot.
De Leon Bearcats race to five straight wins crushing Goldthwaite Eagles 49-0 to stay undefeated district 3-0. Sig Wolfe rushes for 162 yards and Joe Bob Huddleston leads a 358 rushing yard night as De Leon rolls up 119 points in three games while forcing another shutout.
The De Leon Bearcats climb from 40th to 23rd in Class A Harris ratings with a 117.0 playing power, holding a seven point favorite edge over Early at 110.0. Ranger sits 121st at 98.7 and Bangs 127th at 97.4 with Class 10 A standings continuing.
Goldthwaite at 91.3, Cross Plains at 90.3, and Dublin at 60.0 are noted with station identifiers 155 and 206 in the broadcast schedule.
Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church will hold an open house on Sunday October 31 from 2 30 to 5 00 p m Father Ramirez and Father Barry announce that tacos cakes and pies will be sold during the event.
Two locations host this Thursday’s junior high games. The Cubcat seventh and eighth graders start at 5 30 p m at Early, while the Bearcat freshmen and B team meet Early squads at Bearcat Field at 6 p m.
E A Walker of De Leon will lead a Comanche County unit of Texans in Agriculture for Carter to bolster agribusiness backing for Jimmy Carter. Walter Richter of Austin praised Walker as a strong rural advocate, citing support from state leaders and a hoped for victory in Texas.
Voters go to the polls Tuesday November 2 for president and other offices. De Leon Box No 15 at City Hall opens 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Election judges are Bob Huddleston and J C Donegan. Candidates include Ford Carter Bentsen Steelman Poage Burgess Burleson Nabers Longley McClellan Cummings Edwards Garman Foreman Davis Dunn Woodruff Harst.
The De Leon Bearcats host the Early Longhorns at Bearcat Field Friday night in a battle of unbeatens in district 10-A. Both teams sit 3-0 in district play with De Leon scoring 119 and allowing none. Early brings a 7-0 record with key players led by Jacky Cochran Mike Bullard Monty Jones Steve Beal and Glen Faries.
The Junior Class will sponsor a Halloween Carnival at 9 00 p m Saturday October 30 in the High School Auditorium. A short program with varied entertainment and a cake auction are planned. Spook contest entrants must be at 9 00 and jack o lantern entries on stage by 8 30 pm First to third prizes will be awarded Admission is twenty five cents per person.
The sixth United Methodist Church harvest festival will take place Saturday November 6 at City Hall. A craft sale starts at 10 00 a m followed by a barbecue supper from 5 00 to 7 30 p m with an auction to conclude the event.
Joe Ripley of De Leon Volunteer Fire Department is the week’s honoree. A five and a half year member, he works for Comanche County Telephone Company and has prior Navy and electronics training. He is married to Jackie Stephen with two children and active in church and community events.
Comanche County reports 6 800 registered voters eligible for the Tuesday general election. Four hundred new registrations since the spring primaries and runoffs, mainly in De Leon box no 15 and Comanche box no 1, with smaller gains in other boxes.
The De Leon High School senior class sponsors an annual Fall Carnival on Saturday October 30 from 6 to 9 PM at the Exhibit Building of the Peach and Melon Festival Grounds. Activities include Cake Walk Spook House Dart Throw Fish Pond Hayride Make-up Booth and more with tickets sold beginning at 6 PM. All are invited.
The Ex-Students Association sponsors De Leon High School Coming-Home Queen for the De Leon vs Ranger game on November 12. The queen must be a graduate and voters mail entries by November 11. Mrs. Eula Weaver was the first queen last year.
