Bearcats Edge Ranger 7-6 in defensive district clash

De Leon Bearcats edged Ranger Bulldogs 7-6 as Larry Kimmell raced nine yards for the lone TD in the second quarter after a 70 yard drive. Gary Park connected with David Tucker on a 38 yard pass setting up the score. De Leon led 12-9 in first downs and 22-159 yards total offense.

West Texas Council of Government praised by local officials

Tract outlines 14 proposed constitutional amendments to be voted on at the November 7 1972 election. Major changes include authorization for a constitutional convention and four year terms for major state offices.

A list of proposed amendments will appear on the ballot in January 1974. They include raising legislators’ salaries from 4800 to 8400, creating a constitutional revision commission, allowing equal rights protections, and enabling tax exemptions for disabled veterans and survivors.

The De Leon Chamber of Commerce will back the Peanut Quality Contest with local prizes and Caribbean trip incentives for last year’s winners. The Halloween Carnival at Festival Grounds will feature separate school booths, with proceeds funding library books, as De Leon grows as a recreation and retirement area. The De Leon Hospital expands with two lab machines costing about 4000 dollars while plans include a Day Care Center by the Methodist Church and renovations to the old Free Press building. A local music group Establishment V releases a new record with members including bankers merchants and an Angus breeder performing Jeremiah Was a Bullfrog.

Harvest Festival Sets Up Multiple Booths at De Leon City Hall

The November 6 festival plans divide sales into Country Kitchen Country Store Grandma's Attic Santa's Helpers and Gone Fishin. Dale Smith Ava Morgan Edna Myrl Stewart Nancy Thompson Judy Williams Mattie Buckbee Fred Williams and C M Caraway II oversee booths with food crafts gifts and activities. Proceeds benefit the community event at De Leon City Hall all day.

Mrs. L V Park had the only perfect entry in the Free Press Football Contest selecting all ten winners including the Philadelphia Giants game. Tad Tate finished second by closest tie breaker score. several others missed one or two games. Park earns five dollars. Tate receives a one year Free Press subscription.

Bill Brown to Be Honored by Texas Electric Service

Texas Electric Service Company workers from De Leon and nearby areas meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Graham American Legion Hall to welcome seven new members into the Quarter Century Club. W. M. Brown Jr. completed 25 years with the firm in October. Burl B. Hulsey Jr. will present watches, F. N. Sayre will serve as master of ceremonies.
