Gayle Wilkerson invites readers to enjoy last Friday night and honors women. She warns that this weekend brings more trick or treaters and urges caution to protect children, while advising older kids to have fun without destruction.
At De Leon High School Homecoming week events last week, Janell Straub was crowned 1977 Homecoming Queen. Nancy Weaver Brown, formerly 1964 queen, received the Coming Home Queen honor. Jodean Miller was named Bearcat Football Sweetheart with presentations by Bearcat captains David Walker and Randall Clark. Tim Beaty presented FFA Sweetheart Jill Miller, and Dana Grisham introduced FHA Beau Gregory Cisneroz. Julie Andress was named Mighty Maroon Band Sweetheart by band VP Mark Barton.
Dr. F. A. Eisenrich of De Leon was named a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. Fellows earn the title FAAFP after 600 hours of study or board certification. The award was conferred October 11 during the Academy’s Las Vegas convention before about 2,500 attendees.
The Junior Class sponsors the Halloween Queen Coronation at 9 00 p m Saturday October 29 in the High School Auditorium. A short program and entertainment will be offered with a cake auction during the event. Spook contestants must arrive by 9 00 p m and jack o lanterns by 8 00 p m for judging. Prizes will be awarded. Representatives should arrive by 8 30 p m.
Charles Nabors a 25 year Texas Electric employee received a watch at a banquet held October 24 at the American Legion Hall in Graham. Texas Electric president Bill Marquardt gave the presentation. Nabors joined the company in 1952 and completed 25 years in February 1977. He is a De Leon Volunteer Fire Department member for 26 years. He attends Liberty Baptist Church and runs a farming and cattle operation. He was among 13 honored as Quarter Century Club members with attendees from De Leon and Gorman.
The November 8 election includes seven amendments with absentee voting through November 4 at the County Clerk's office. Amendments cover court size, veteran land bonds, bail limits for felons, cultural tax relief, agricultural and marine associations, banking via electronic devices, and the Judicial Qualifications Commission name and powers.
De Leon and Bangs share the district lead at 3-0 as the Bearcats travel to Early for a 7:30 p.m. district game. Early sits 1-2 after opening wins and a late loss, with Milton Sargent and Larry Fulton anchoring the line and Gary Summers directing the offense.
Checks mailed last week show DeLeon receiving 1528.64 with a 20.8 percent rise over last year and year to date 1977 total 36578.45, up from 31985.46 in 1976. Nearby towns also received October payments: Comanche 7730.82, Dublin 1217.67, Eastland 6667.02, Rising Star 552.76, Cross Plains 1250.69, Ranger 5105.32.
Danny Wilson joins the De Leon Police Department as a patrolman after leaving Tyler where he worked as a security guard at Broadway Square Mall. He has 34 hours of law enforcement training from Tyler Junior College. He is the son of Mrs. Herman Gilder of De Leon and his wife Carlene, with their four year old daughter Michelle.
The report lists daily high and low temperatures from October 18 to October 24 with values ranging from 60 to 88 degrees. Rainfall is recorded for October 22 at .73 inches and October 23 at .28 inches.
Benny and Janna Morris are the new owners of the Montgomery Ward Sales Agency in De Leon. The catalog store is now Morris Sales Agency with Janna Morris as operating manager. Nadine Kea remains as clerk and Benny continues full time at Golden Oak Milling Company.
The Harris Rating System picks De Leon 13 points ahead of the Early Longhorns. De Leon ranks 27th in Class A with 120.7 power, while Early sits 93rd at 107.4. Other 10 A teams include Bangs 98.3, Dublin 98.2, Ranger 89.3, Goldthwaite 85.3, and Cross Plains 76.0. Top Texas Class A teams are Seagraves 140.9 and Marfa 140.8.
Daylight savings time ends this weekend with clocks set back one hour at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday October 30. The change affects residents and businesses adjusting schedules for the new standard time.
