J C W s Ramblings notes De Leon Bearcats delivered an exciting football win over Cross Plains despite a sparse crowd. Weather kept fans away yet players earned praise for a thrilling district opening victory. A festival carnival and Twirlerettes drill team appear on upcoming local events.

Leon Bearcats aim to move to 2-0 in district with a 7:30 kickoff against Ranger. Ranger, 0-6, struggled in a 32-0 loss to Santa Anna, despite returning nine starters and star back Mike Myers.
Amy Glazier a De Leon seventh grader won first place in the Free PRESS Football Contest by correctly predicting eight of ten games. Tad Tate finished second while Rick Brinson placed third. Several contestants missed three or more games. Glazier earns five dollars, while Tate and Brinson gain one year subscriptions.
De Leon volunteers announce a Muscular Dystrophy campaign with Deval Brown as Campaign Treasurer. On November 6, marchers will go door to door to solicit funds, with Farmers & Merchants Bank of De Leon serving as campaign depository. The effort is part of a nationwide drive to aid affected young adults and advance a cure.
The Texas Constitution adopted in 1876 has been amended 201 times. Voters will decide on 14 amendments including pay raises for legislators and a tax exemption for the elderly, plus a four year term for top officials and a revision commission to draft a new constitution. Local questions include abolishing the Lamar County Hospital District. Page 8 continues.
De Leon Bearcats win their District 10-A opener 32 27 over Cross Plains Buffaloes fueled by a 20 point fourth quarter. Craig Smith propelled De Leon with multiple scores while John Swint and Gary Park connected on key plays. Next up is Ranger.
The Halloween Carnival sponsored by the Friends of the Library starts at 5 00 p m this Saturday with booths from the E S A Study Club and Garden Club plus games fish ponds bingo cake walk and a spook house Tickets prizes and food including hot dogs coffee cakes and sandwiches are on offer Volunteers are sought by calling the library The coronation begins at 9 00 p m at the high school auditorium with proceeds for the Junior Class
The De Leon Twirlerettes, a new drill team of elementary girls sponsored by Mrs. David Brownlee and Mrs. Ray Joiner, have performed in Dublin and Eastland parades and for Jr. High football. They will perform Thursday night for the 8th grade game here and again for Ranger Jr. College on Nov 4.
Kim Cockerham has joined the staff of Higginbotham Funeral Home in De Leon. He and his wife Barbara reside at 906 S. Austin. A Comanche native, his parents live there. Barbara hails from Brownwood. He trained at Commonwealth College of Science in Houston and is a Baptist.
