Fourteen Indicted by Comanche County Grand Jury

The October term grand jury for Comanche County 220th District Court returned fourteen indictments led by Owen Irvin Dunn, Precinct 3 commissioner, charged with failing to disclose a public interest in a tractor. Other defendants include Sam Pennington, Jo Ann Long, David Coates, Kenneth R. Harry, Terrell Stone, Steven Rex Shipman, Rufus Lopez, Nolan Reed, James Torres Edwards, Edward Carl Cox, John Watson Alexander, Roger Herrera, and A W Meads. Authorities note Dunn posted a $1,000 bond and faces a Class A misdemeanor with up to one year in jail and a $2,000 fine. no trial date is set.

Julie Andress Competing For 1980 Texas Watermelon Queen

Julia Lee Andress of De Leon is one of twelve Texas contestants in the 14th annual Texas Watermelon Queen pageant at the Hilton Sea Island South Padre Island from November 1 to 3. She is sponsored by the De Leon Peach and Melon Festival Committee and graduates from De Leon High School in 1980.

Watermelon queen hopefuls compete for state title at TSU

The field includes Miss De Leon 1979 and 11 others from Austin Houston Edinburg and more. Contestants are judged on personality poise appearance and stage presence with individual interviews and formal wear and speech rounds. The winner becomes TSU entrant and official goodwill ambassador for the Texas Watermelon Association touring state fairs festivals and parades.

Ranger's Bulldogs travel to Bearcat Field in De Leon for a 7 30 p m high school football game. De Leon sits at 1 4 1 while Ranger is winless in six starts. QB Ricky Osborn has linked with Ruben Zarate on two scoring passes and RB Keith Wheeler scored last week versus Dublin.

Bill Scott Wins Again in Local Football Contest

Bearcats Fall to Cross Plains Buffaloes 14 to 6

Cross Plains defeated De Leon 14 to 6 to hand the Bearcats a second straight district loss. The Buffaloes led 8-0 at halftime and extended the lead on a 52 yard ground drive. De Leon pulled within 14-6 after a 7 yard pass from John Dennington to Edwin Hale and a 30 yard TD from Dennington to John Ledbetter. Dennington added 108 passing yards. Ledbetter 89 receiving. Lewis 110 rushing.

65 Club Members Attend Ice Capades in Fort Worth

Ninety eight 65 Club members visited the Tarrant County Convention Center in Fort Worth on October 13 to see the Ice Capades in their 40th year of entertainment. Highlights included Celestial Voyage into space with Leigh Ann Davis, Wiz City visit for kids with Fred Flintstone and Yogi Bear, clown act by Mike Course and Bob Young, Disco Encounters with vivid costumes, juggler Albert Lucas, and Canadian stars Lynn Nightingale and Don Knight. Hosts were LaJoyce Davis, Mary Beth Hodges, Lena Taylor, and Sue Wilson.
