Gayle Wilkerson notes time changes this Sunday and Halloween activities starting with the coronation and carnival Saturday night. Trick or treating occurs Thursday October 31. Hunters can pick up permits at the county courthouse Thursday and Friday. Rain last week varied, with 4 percent more at some homes northeast of town.
The Halloween Coronation will be held on Saturday October 26 at 7 p.m. in the De Leon High School Auditorium with a small admission charge. Queen candidates are Monica Flores Leslie Williams Kim Caraway and Kathy Hamilton. A spook contest for preschool through sixth grade will be judged by the 1965 Halloween Queen, with first second and third prizes. The queen’s court includes representatives from kindergarten through eighth grade with paired student names listed.
A fall revival starts Sunday at First Baptist Church led by evangelist Sal Sberna from Spring. Doug Washburn directs music. Cecil Harper is pastor and Alan Wimberley handles music and youth. Services Sunday at 10 40 a m and 6 p m with evening services Monday to Wednesday at 7 p m and a youth rally Sunday at 5 p m.
By Altha Wilkerson the Harvest Festival will be held at De Leon City Hall on Saturday November 2 starting at 10:00 a.m. The event, organized by First Methodist Church Morton's Chapel and Downing Methodist, features baked goods auctions lunches and a barbecue dinner for 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Activities for children accompany shopping and food stalls.
The DHS Senior Class hosts a Halloween Carnival Saturday at the P&M Festival Grounds starting around 7:45 p.m. Activities include hayride, firetruck rides, football and basketball throws, bingo, fortune tellers, fish, dart and candle throws, face painting, animal walk, cake walk, spook house, and a concession stand run by senior mothers offering cakes, pies, chili packs, nachos, and Dr Pepper.
Four entrants missed three games last week while others failed four or more. Ian Jones of Dublin takes first, with Charles Morgan and Alma Ruth Hancock tied for second, sharing second and third place money. Allen also missed three games.
Bearcats set to host Hico Tigers in De Leon for a District 14AA game with kickoff at 7:30 p.m. De Leon carries a 3 3 1 record in the season through six plus one matchup.
Daylight Saving Time ends Sunday at 2 a.m. Standard Time returns. Clocks should be set back one hour before going to bed Saturday night.
Olney Savings Association will host a chili supper on Thursday October 24 from 5 30 to 8 00 pm at 601 N Fannin to celebrate its new De Leon area branch. Tom Enloe’s Cowboy Chili and Levee Singers with Ed Bennet will perform. Grand prize is a color television with other prizes. Alan D Myers Jr, chairman CEO, invites all to join in the community event. The 56 year old association has assets of 930 million and operates multiple offices across North Texas including Olney Seymour Jacksboro Bridgeport Nocona Ranger Eastland Electra Vernon Wichita Falls and many more.
Texas Parks and Wildlife will issue antlerless deer permits in Comanche County on Thursday and Friday from 8 am to 12 noon and 1 to 5 pm at the Comanche County Courthouse. A map shows compartments and rates. Landowners must own or control acreage at least half the compartment rate. After opening, permits available only through regional offices in Rockport San Angelo Tyler Waco and the Austin state office. Local department personnel will not issue permits. Landowners or agents urged to pick up permits on issuance dates.
The no pass no play policy, effective since January, bars students with under seventy in required classes from extracurriculars for the next six weeks. In De Leon high and middle schools, three varsity football players, five junior varsity players, three managers, five eighth graders, three seventh graders, five band students, and several girls athletes across volleyball and basketball face ineligibility. Critics call the rule punitive, while supporters say students knew of it for over a year and should adapt.
A USDA study of 16 Texas counties shows Comanche rising milk production from 9.5 million pounds in May 1978 to 13.29 million in May 1985, a 40 percent increase, while the average per farm deliveries fell 3 percent. Farms climbed from 4 to 65, signaling new smaller operations entering dairying. Comanche remains fifth in state production in most years.
