Gayle Wilkerson notes the Bearcats walloped Dublin 35 to 6 Friday night and eyes a state run in 1978. She urges fans to travel to Cross Plains Thursday to watch the younger De Leon teams, promising exciting Bearcats action.
Abilene Reporter News named Bearcat coach Grady West as Coach of the Week. Bill Hart notes West directed De Leon to a 35-6 upset over undefeated Dublin, erasing expectations that Dublin would claim the District 10-A title.
Congressman Omar Burleson reports the Small Business Administration has pushed back disaster assistance deadlines. Physical damage aid now runs to November 13, 1978, economic injury aid to January 11, 1979. Affected drought counties include Baylor Callahan Coleman Comanche Eastland Erath Jack Knox Montague Palo Pinto Parker Shackelford Stephens Stonewall Throckmorton Wise. Crosby and Floyd counties hit by hail.
Central Texas Opportunities offers weatherization assistance to elderly, disabled, and low income residents in Brown, Callahan, Coleman, Runnels, Comanche, Eastland, McCulloch, and Stephens counties. Funds cover storm windows caulking insulation and exterior repairs on a first come basis to reduce energy costs.
De Leon Bearcats opened strong to defeat the Dublin Lions 35-6 as both teams stood 4-0 overall. Walker scored twice, Powell connected on a halfback pass, and Cisneroz intercepted two passes while Wilcoxson and Sanders ran and kicked for the Bearcats.
Cross Plains Buffaloes visit Bearcat Field for a third district game against Bearcats. Cross Plains sits 0-2 in district play and 2-3 overall, while De Leon stands 2-0 in district and 5-0 overall. Buffaloes beat Jim Ned 14-6, then lost to Baird 20-12, and beat Rising Star before recent losses to Dublin and San Saba. Kickoff 7:30 p.m.
NTC Certified Public Accountant Donnie Skaggs and Attorney James Morgan relocate their offices to 107 North Tevac, moving from 603 North Fannin. Skaggs, De Leon High School 1969, Tarleton 1973, worked in Dallas before returning in 1975. Morgan, De Leon High School 1966, Tarleton 1970, TAMU 1973, UT 1976, has practiced law in De Leon since 1976 and taught business law at Tarleton 1976–78.
Comanche County Museum in Comanche on Moorman Street will host an Open House Sunday October 29 from 2 00 to 4 00 p m Local volunteers Jack Hesty Rae Jean Hesty John Locke and Norma Locke from De Leon have spent three years restoring the building Viewers are invited to attend and consider donating or loaning items to the museum
De Leon remains the top Class A team in the state this week and gaining strength per Harris. De Leon leads with 5-0 and 139.5, followed by Iraan 5-0 135.9 and Lexington 5-0 135.9, then Farmersville 6-0 134.9 and China Spring 4-1 134.9. Cross Plains ranked 167th in Class A. De Leon is favored 30 points over Cross Plains with Early by one over San Saba, Bangs 29 over Goldthwaite, and Dublin over Ranger by 45. Gorman is listed as the number five team in Class B.
Evelyn Moore reports Charlene Counts Miller was elected Coming Home Queen at the De Leon High School Homecoming game in Dublin Friday night. Miller, a 1943 graduate, teaches fifth grade at De Leon Elementary and is active in First Baptist Church, E.S.A. Sorority, and band parents.
The De Leon First United Methodist Church announces its annual Harvest Festival on Saturday November 4 at the De Leon Civic Center City Hall. Doors open 10:00 a.m. with Granny's Attic The Sandwich Shop Country Store Country Kitchen and the Children's Corner. Underwood Bar-B-Que runs 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. An auction of donated and homemade items will raise most proceeds for the Day Care Center serving the De Leon area. Volunteers are invited to donate toys baked goods or homemade items and contact Bodie Weaver Wilford Millsap or David Lindsey.
The Women’s Ministries Department sponsors a bazaar on Saturday October 21 from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the church fellowship hall at 504 N Travis. Family color portraits on Deco Plaques, coupon sales in advance, and items like quilts, ceramics, pillows, aprons, toys, cakes and cookies will be offered. Proceeds fund hall improvements. Charles Stenholm campaigns for Congress's 17th District plan a bus and car caravan through De Leon on Wednesday October 25 from 2 30 to 2 45 p m local time. James Morgan organizes the De Leon stop with Stenholm and his wife Cindy joining supporters. Stenholm aims to meet many people as he seeks the Burleson seat. Burleson has endorsed him in the past and Stenholm won the runoff two to one.
John Pickens and Mrs. Derwin Nabors of De Leon were named to the Region IV Child Welfare and Abuse Advisory Council. The panel partners with the Law Enforcement Agency to address county problems and promote child welfare through community involvement and collaboration with social worker Dianne Hunter of Brownwood.
