J C W argues that zero pollution drives up paper costs and shortages, forcing mills to cut production and smaller papers to shrink. He warns environmental zeal could threaten a free diverse press and urges seeking a different path to protection.
The City of De Leon has received 7234 federal sharing funds for street improvements and water and sewer extensions.
The Leon Bearcats travel to Cross Plains to meet the Buffaloes in a 7:30 Friday district opener. Cross Plains returns eleven lettermen, four on offense and four on defense, with a 4-6 previous season and 2-3 this year.
Gary Dodd and Robbie Pavie are out with injuries while Tommy Cleere returns for Cross Plains. The Bearcats defeated the Buffaloes 32 27 last season and seek district win number one Friday night in Cross Plains.
PAR Country Club announces new restaurant management effective October 15, naming Mrs. Virgil Jo Ann Hardin as chef. She brings 15 years of professional cooking, prior roles at Diamond Oaks Glen Garden and Colonial Country Clubs, and a reputation for elaborate buffets and varied flavorings.
The week brought prolonged rainfall across Comanche County and Texas with reports of six to seven inches in De Leon and nearby areas. Farmers face uncertain damage to peanuts as lakes and stock tanks rise, while several communities log varied totals from five to over ten inches in the past two weeks.
The De Leon Industrial Foundation reports strong prospects for a new industry in De Leon. Bibby’s Creations of Rising Star will interview and accept applications for sewing machine operators in ladies handbags Friday and Saturday October 19-20 from 9 am to 4 pm at 208 N Texas. If fifteen to twenty operators are hired this weekend the plant will open within thirty days and employ about thirty workers.
A community choir is forming to perform Handel's The Messiah at Christmas. Interested singers should meet at the First United Methodist Church Monday at 7:09 pm to begin rehearsals under the direction of Don Halbrook, director of the De Leon High School Band.
Rodger Coan won the Free Press football contest with twelve entries tying for first and four misses. He led by guessing 56 in the tiebreaker against 68 total points in the Cowboy Ram game. Ricky Brinson took second, one point behind, with N L Box and Neil Mason tied for third at 49.
The weather report, issued by the U.S. Corps of Engineers, covers 24 hours from 8 a.m. to 8 a.m. It lists total rainfall year to date as 32.55 inches. A contest awards prizes including a year’s Free Press subscription to the winner and three month subscripts to Box and Mrs. Mason for tying for third place.
The Pe Leon Public Schools announce an adult education program funded by state and federal agencies. Open to residents age 17 and up who lack a high school diploma, offering credit toward a diploma or GED preparation. 120 hours total, meeting one or two nights weekly, no tuition, minimum ten students, begin within two weeks with registration through the Superintendent of Schools.
