De Leon Bears Open District Play At Cross Plains

De Leon travels to Cross Plains for a district opener at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Cross Plains, led by coach Waggoner, fields a bigger, more experienced squad than last year’s 2-8 team and features standout halfback Rodney Renfro. The Buffaloes return 14 regulars and recently lost 61-6 to Baird.

The De Leon Bearcats crushed the Bangs Dragons 44-0 on Friday night gaining almost 500 yards. Ronnie Aguero scored on a 10 yard run and added two in the third, while Larry Kimmel rushed for 138 yards and Randy Hardin had a 12 yard pass to extend the lead. The defense held strong as De Leon finished non district play at 3-2.

Harvest Festival Plans for De Leon Methodist Church

De Leon United Methodist Church announces its ninth Harvest Festival on November 6 inviting all in the area to participate. The drive links festival funds to church improvements including a youth center and a forthcoming Day Care Center, urging plans and gifts from Methodists and nonmembers alike.

Big Fish Kill At Lake Banes Attracts 5000 Attendees

More than 5000 people attended the Big Fish Kill at Lake Banes last weekend, with visitors from New Mexico Oklahoma and many Texas cities. Officials estimate 80 to 90 percent of fish killed as 300 boats launched amid traffic jams and boat size limits. Authorities will test the lake this week and stock the lake with 5000 channel cat and 5000 hybrid sunfish. Prize winners include Charlie Thomas Brownwood for largest carp and H B Helms Stephenville and Harold Patterson Ft Worth for largest bass.

Wilkerson Elected Zone 3 ULS&WCD Director

J. T. Wilkerson was elected director of zone 3 on the Upper Leon Soil and Water Conservation District. He previously served as secretary and operates a 227 acre peanut and beef cattle farm near De Leon. The current board includes Gene Gilbreath Norman Moore E F Harrison and Joe Criswell from zones 1 2 5 and 4 respectively.

Grand Jury Indicts 33 in Comanche County Session

Comanche County's 52nd District Court returned 33 felony indictments against 29 defendants after a two day session led by Grand Jury Foreman Hiram Smith Jr. The indictments cover assault with intent to murder theft unlawful removal of mortgaged property DWI desertion of wife and children fraud with worthless checks robbery burglary hog theft forgery and passing. Judge Byron McClellan will arraign defendants Friday with trials set for October 26 and December 13.
