De Leon Residents Shine On De Leon Day At Waco Fair

Despite rain De Leon residents attended Heart O Texas Fair in Waco for De Leon Day. Miss Helen Eugenia Harmon rode in the Grand Entry and rode sidesaddle on Maude the buckskin. eight-member Roping Club marched with orange and white banners. Attendees included Frederick G Harmon and many others. Waco Fair praised De Leon as a progressive small city and noted strong neighboring town cooperation.

The De Leon Quarterback Club plans a $1500 electric scoreboard and clock for Bearcat Stadium. C E Irby chairs a fundraising committee with L D Stewart Kermit Neel Ralph Terrill and Audie Whitehurst to solicit donations and recruit 100 more members paying $2 annual dues.

C. L. Kinchen Passes Away

The community mourns the death of C. L. Kinchen who died at 3 a.m after surgery. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m at the First Baptist Church. A full obituary will appear next week in the Free Press.

Traffic Violations Reach 2181 For Sept

Fort Worth District Texas Highway Patrol recorded 2181 traffic law violators in September. Captain Jack Sutherland noted 719 arrests and 1462 warnings with speeding leading arrests, followed by no passing zones and wrong side of road. Counties in the district include Comanche Cooke Denton Erath Hood Jack Johnson Palo Pinto Parker Somervell Tarrant and Wise.

Scout Leaders Training Course in Dublin

A training course for all Scout leaders will be held at the First Methodist Church in Dublin at 7 30 p m on Tuesdays in October. Cub leaders work with ages 8 to 10, Scout Leaders with 11 to 13, Explorer Leaders with 14. The notice invites anyone interested to learn where the funds go and how to use time for a good program with fun fellowship and scout skits.

Kenneth Fleming Birthday Honoree Feted at Sunday Party

Kenneth Fleming was honored on his twelfth birthday with a surprise party after Sunday School at St. Joe church. Twenty four children attended the event with games, colored treats, and two decorated cakes. Guests included family and friends from Dallas and Baytown connections, totaling 33 attendees.

Santa Fe awards in 4-H program reach 68 education grants

Texas receives its portion of 68 educational awards and twenty five $250 scholarships funded by Santa Fe through the National Committee on Boys and Girls Club Work. Winners will be honored at a special dinner in Chicago during the 4-H Congress. Robinsons Move to Remodeled Texas Avenue Home

Mr and Mrs Ralph Robinson now reside in their Texas Ave home purchased recently from Miss Vera Mahan. The house has been remodeled with new windows repapered and partitions altered. Bearcats Battle Indians to 0 0 Tie in Comanche County

The De Leon Bearcats and the Comanche Indians played to a 0 0 tie at Bearcat Stadium with 3000 fans watching. Both teams posted 14 first downs and the Bearcats held a 202 to 135 yard edge in total offense. The bands provided halftime entertainment as De Leon prepares for Breckenridge, with only two District 2A 8 teams in action this weekend.

Fort Worth Patrol Reports No Accidents in Comanche County

Captain Jack Sutherland of the Fort Worth District Texas Highway Patrol released the Comanche County Rural Traffic Accident Summary for September. There were no accidents reported, a decrease of five from the same period in 1954.

Services Held For Neil Smith

Mr and Mrs A Warren and sons Otho and James of Fort Worth attended the funeral of Neil Smith who died suddenly Saturday morning. The Smiths had lived in De Leon for several years and raised their family there. The Free Press joins friends in extending sympathy to the bereaved family.
