N L Box repeats as winner in a football pool, the only entrant to miss two games. Donnie Hicks places second on tie breaker, Steve Hallmark third. Several names earn honorable mention as many missed five to seven games. Box earns five dollars. Hicks wins a one year Free Press subscription. Hallmark gets six months.
The Choralleers of Southwestern Assemblies of God College Waxahachie Texas will minister in song and word at the De Leon Assembly of God Church on October 14. Rev Joe Bernath and Judy Bernath both students will preach and direct the program with Debbie Forsford Debble Madden and other college singers providing a one hour sacred concert and brief Word of God message.
Comanche County shows a rising education level with a 10.3 year local median schooling and a large share of adults unable to read or write. Government data place 1,858 residents in the functionally illiterate category, while nationwide figures cite 19 million illiterate adults and 7 million with severe reading problems.
Three local Bearcats and two youth squads meet undefeated Comanche opponents Thursday night in Comanche. Bearcats stand 5-0 with a stingy defense, Cubcats eighth grade 4-1 after scoring 60 in two games, and seventh graders 2-3 after scoring 44 in their last two. Kickoff times vary from 5:00 to 8:00 as Bearcat varsity sits this week.
The ninety ninth annual meeting of the Comanche Baptist Association will be held October 15 1973 at First Baptist Church Gustine. Twenty four county churches in the Southern Baptist Convention form the association led by moderator Rev Eugene W Prevo. Speakers include Roger Brooks Howard Payne College Dr Clifford Nelson and Rev Travis Gibson. Rev Billy C Spencer will deliver the afternoon sermon and Berry Taylor will speak in the evening. Afternoon session begins 2:00 p m and evening 6:30 p m.
De Leon and Dublin fought to a 0-0 deadlock as time expired amid a controversial late field goal. Dublin edged De Leon 11 first downs to 10 with Dublin totaling 208 yards to De Leon’s 181, while Bearcat quarterback Craig Smith left the field with an injury and returned late.
Fourteen people met at the high school for the first Freshmen college English session. Leon Valley Migrant Health project and Ranger Junior College offer night credit courses in De Leon. At present only Freshmen English is offered. more courses will begin if at least 10 enroll.
