Community column highlights peanut crop prospects with rain benefiting yields and De Leon area farms. Voting for Homecoming Queen urged, DHS graduates eligible, entries due by Thursday noon. Announcements include new columns on dental care and church ministry, event notices, and a barbecue fundraiser at City Park before Friday night game at 7:30.
Homecoming events center on Friday night as De Leon High School hosts Bangs in the district opener. Half time features Homecoming Queen Terri Sones and several Sweethearts including Mitzi Lindley Janet Higginbottom and Charla Taylor. FHA Beau Jackson Boen is also announced. A Coming Home Queen ballot is on page 4 with a deadline of Thursday noon October 4. Candidates listed include Janet Park Brinson Loretta Peevy Bush Evelyn Kinchen Moore and Audean Whitehurst Hammit.
The City Park Renovation Committee sponsors a barbecue supper from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, October 5, at City Park. Tickets are sold at several town locations including F and M Bank, De Leon Free Press, Weaver Drug, Cactus and Calico, Locke Insurance, De Leon High School, Nowlin Funeral Home, Doyle Smith, Nancy Brown, Migrant Clinic, and Smith's Department Store. The committee, drawn from civic groups in De Leon, aims to fund improvements at the park.
The De Leon Booster Club will host a BBQ supper at De Leon City Hall on Saturday October 13 from 6 to 9 PM Tickets are available at F & M Bank Clark Tractor Weaver Drug or from Booster Club members.
The De Leon Bearcats, 1-2, meet 2-1 Bangs Dragons at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Bearcat Field for their district opener. Key players include Bearcats QB McCorkle, FB Keen, RB Zink, End Perry, C Kirkland, and linemen Kaplan and Rush, with defensive returners Sikes and McCorkle. Bangs counters with QB McCorkle, RB Keen, End Perry, and DB McKinney.
This week’s Football Contest proved hard as all entries missed three games or more. Bill Scott is the first winner based on tie-breaker points scored in the Eastland Baird game, with W. Hadley Scott second and Marge Murphy third. Other entrants missing three games but off on points included Charles Morgan and several others.
The De Leon Chamber of Commerce organizes a Park Renewal Committee to oversee a city park renovation including top soil landscaping watering system new tables bar-b-que grills playground equipment and lighting. A kick off bar-b-que is planned October 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the park preceding the Bangs De Leon homecoming game with tickets available at local sponsors.
Area resident H L Fronterhouse reports shooting four rattlesnakes near De Leon in recent days with a 410 shotgun. He expects a larger snake soon and plans a hunt around 3 PM. Snakes are moving into the area, feeding on rabbits and rats as they prepare to hibernate. Fronterhouse has not been bitten and has never eaten rattlesnake meat.
A list of grand jurors reports at 8 30 a m October 9 to serve the 220th Judicial District Court in Comanche County. Cathy Bruton Julie Andress and Shelli Hammit swept first places as Peach and Melon Festival float won at Dublin and Meridian parades. Cathy Bruton will compete for State Peach Queen at Texas A and M University on October 2 and 3 with her parents present. Local listings note multiple residents in Comanche De Leon Gustine and nearby areas.
