Early Sunday tornado damages De Leon with $50,000 estimate

A Sunday morning tornado touched multiple De Leon locations causing extensive damage. No injuries were reported though losses are pegged at about $50,000 with insurance adjusters assessing totals. The hardest hit was the De Leon Church of Christ on Highway 6, roofing and water damage, plus damage to the J E Henderson residence and several smaller sites along a southwest to northeast path. Fire Chief Deral Brown called it a freak, unwarned event and the town’s first tornado in memory.

Comanche County Proclaims National 4H Week 1985

Comanche County observes National 4H Week October 6-12 1985 with judge Bobbye Allen issuing the proclamation. About 200 4H youth and adult leaders participate in the program across the county under the Texas Extension Service and local volunteers. The proclamation notes 4H aims to train head heart hands and health and to prepare youth as future citizens and leaders through learn by doing projects. It emphasizes the motto To Make the Best Better and urges community support for 4H activities.

De Leon Names Ron Hilburn City Manager

The De Leon City Council hired Ron Hilburn of Stephenville as city manager. Hilburn, 44, holds a bachelor’s degree and has worked in real estate. He began duties on Monday September 30, replacing James Minor who resigned last month for a similar post in Jacksboro. The council reviewed about 35 resumes and interviewed eight candidates.

Texas Highway Patrol Probes 14 Rural Crashes in Comanche

The Texas Highway Patrol investigated 14 rural traffic accidents in Comanche County during August 1985. No deaths occurred and six people were injured. For the year thus far Comanche County has 97 rural crashes with three deaths and 53 injuries.

The De Leon Ex-Students Association urges ex-students to vote for this year’s Coming-Home Queen. Ballots are due by noon Tuesday October 8, to the Free Press or Box 320 De Leon. The association will tally votes at the October 11 De Leon versus Whitney game halftime.
