Following House Bill 30, 1961 tax statements will reflect new penalties and interest for delinquent taxes. Effective January 1, 1982, delinquent taxes incur up to a 12 percent penalty and 12 percent annual interest. (Cont'd to Page 2)
For the second week in a row Mark Decker wins the football contest and takes a $5.00 check. His entry was the sole scorer in the Goldthwaite Ranger game, with a second and third place tie between Virginia Leonard of Gorman and Carolyn George earning $2.50 each. Several others missed one game including Debbie Fleming Oscar Singleton John M Weaver L E Singleton Jr and Xandra Morgan. The Jets Oilers game was the most frequently missed.
A lifelong Comanche resident 27 year old Ralph Dewitt Spruill drowned when his car drove off a boat ramp into Proctor Lake at 3:35 a.m. The death was ruled an accidental drowning by Justice of the Peace Fred Roberson. A passenger escaped injury. He is survived by his parents, two sons, a daughter, and other relatives in Comanche.
Nearly five million 4 H members nationwide observe National 4 H Week October 4 10 with the theme 4 H Pathways To The Future. Members and 523 000 volunteer leaders join learn by doing projects to guide youth toward career development and community service. The 60th National 4 H Congress runs November 30 to December 3 1981 recognizing about 1700 youth delegates with sponsors funding trips to Chicago and more than 265 000 in scholarships. The program is the youth arm of the Cooperative Extension Service and reaches youth in every county in the United States with related programs in about 45 million youths in two countries.
The Central Texas Pork Producers held their second annual Show Pig Sale on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Comanche County Livestock Center. Wesley Mathis exhibited the grand champion, with sale totals reaching $8 335.00.
District 10-AA action starts Friday night with De Leon Bearcats traveling to Ranger for the opener against the Bulldogs. Ranger previously ended a 23-game skid by beating Millsap 7-0, after a 19-6 loss to Albany in their first game.
Archery season begins October 3 and runs through November 1 for deer and turkey. It allows three deer of either sex with two bucks and two gobblers or bearded hens. The regular deer season runs November 14 to January 3 with a limit of three deer and two bucks.
Comanche County farms will be honored in the Texas Family Land Heritage Program announced by Agriculture Commissioner Reagan V. Brown. Recipients William L. Carruth Farm and Terry Farm in De Leon are recognized for maintaining continuous agricultural activity for 100 years or more, with awards ceremony set November 10 in the Capitol Rotunda at 1 p.m. Brown notes 1,454 farms now registered since 1974 and mentions the program’s history narratives stored in regional libraries.
The Peanut Gallery Arts and Crafts Fair sponsored by the Women's Division of the Chamber of Commerce will be held at City Hall on Saturday October 10 from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. Wanda Wright, the fair chairman, invites display space reservations by calling 893-6280. A wide variety of arts and crafts is expected.
De Leon ISD honors bus drivers John Ed Grisham Judy Hadley Lawrence Montgomery Linda McLearen Ray McLearen Floyd McLearen and Hopie Alexander during National School Bus Safety Week. The district serves 300 students with reminders of the Texas Motor Vehicle Uniform Act requiring motorists to stop for stopped school buses displaying two flashing red lights.
Harris rating lists De Leon as the 70th team in Class AA with a 125 power. Eastland sits at 3 with 147, Bangs 62 at 126, San Saba 77 at 125, Dublin 119 at 116, Cisco 120 at 116, 177 Ranger 104 and Early 100. In week opening games De Leon favored by 12 over Ranger, Bangs 18 over Early, Eastland 31 over Cisco, and San Saba 7 over Dublin.
The Upper Leon Soil and Water Conservation District will hold an October 8 election at 7 00 PM at the district building on Sipe Springs Road in De Leon to fill Zone 3. Eligibility includes owning agricultural land in the district subdivision and residing in a county within the district, plus being 18 or older. Current directors include Norman Moore, Sidney Edwin Jones, J W Sadberry, W D Brown and George Steel among others.
