Briscoe approves two LEAA grants for WCTCOG

Governor Dolph Briscoe has approved two criminal justice grants to the West Central Texas Council of Governments totaling 63,528 dollars. One grant provides 35,371 dollars for the 1978 planning grant and the other 28,157 dollars funds the regional law enforcement academy for training officers across the area. The grants were among 121 statewide under the Control Act of 1977.

De Leon School Board Allows Gym Use On Weekends

The De Leon Board of Education approved outsider use of the gym from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. A supervisor will monitor those hours. Only tennis shoes allowed. The floor has been refinished for the basketball season.

City Sales Tax Collections Rise Across Texas Cities

City sales tax collections show a 22 percent rise over last year with 880 Texas cities receiving 19.2 million dollars as November shares of the one percent levy. De Leon alone collects 1712.55 dollars versus 1268.77 last year, a 15 percent gain, bringing 1977 total to 38,291 dollars, up about 5,000 from 1976.

Stenholm Campaign Kicks Off With Local Coffee Gathering

De Leon residents meet candidate Charles Stenholm at F and M Bank Community Room as he launches early campaign for the 17th Congressional District. Stenholm, a farmer, urged civic involvement and warned against empty promises while pledging to represent local needs across 33 counties.

Texas Electric Rate Increase Effective November 22

The Public Utility Commission of Texas approved a 13.2 percent revenue increase for Texas Electric Service Company, effective system wide for consumption on or after November 22. Residential bills will rise with a $7 monthly customer charge and variable per kilowatt hour rates, plus a fuel cost charge that varies monthly. The company states rates remain among the lowest in Texas and the nation.

Kittens and Bearcats Tip Off 1977-78 Season Friday

The 1977 78 basketball season opens with the Kittens and Bearcats hosting Comanche Friday night. Varsity girls at 7:00 p.m. and boys follow. Barbara Coan in first year as Kittens coach notes quick outside shooters and driving offense. JV squads feature multiple freshmen and sophomores with new leadership. Hunter Missing At Proctor Lake

A Dallas duck hunter 57 year old Donald Henry Coultrup remains missing after last seen Thursday morning near the island at Proctor Lake. His boat was found empty near the dam along with his cap and duck call as rescue crews from De Leon and Comanche assist law enforcement and volunteers in a multi day search. This marks the fourth duck hunter lost off the island in two years.

City to Hold Public Hearing on 1977 Block Grant

The City of De Leon will hold the first of two public hearings on November 30 at City Hall at 6:00 p.m. The hearings inform residents about the $250,000 1977 Block Grant awarded in October. All phases will be explained, including house rehabilitation, and all interested citizens are urged to attend.

Bearcats Fall Bi District to Wall Hawks 21 6

Wall Hawks defeated De Leon Bearcats 21 to 6 in bi district play in San Angelo after a power outage delay. Randall Sanders connected for a 10 yard TD with Ronald Powell but the Bearcats could only muster 6 points and 25 rushing yards while Wall added 141 passing yards and four scorers including TB Clayton Weishuhn and Mark Hirt.
