Bearcats Coast to 35 6 Victory Over Early Longhorns

De Leon finishes 9 1 season as co champions of District 10 A with San Saba after a 35 6 home win over Early Longhorns. Ronald Powell rushed for 141 yards, Randall Sanders added 79, and Powell scored four times as De Leon clinched the district title for the sixth straight year while San Saba advances to the playoffs.

New Electric Rates In Effect As Of October 27

Texas Electric Service Company raised rates by 8.4 percent after PUC approval on October 26 1978. The new charges apply to all customers effective October 27 with summer increases higher than winter. Affects residential and total electric customers. examples show typical bills rising for 500 to 2 000 kilowatt hours. Local manager D R Armstrong notes billing will reflect old rates for part of a cycle then new rates. The minimum bill drops from 7 to 6 dollars and includes 25 kilowatt-hours.

Southern Savings Tops $100 Million Mark

Roy H. Simmons, president, announced total assets and liabilities reached 100,020,400.69, making Southern Savings the first area financial institution to exceed 100 million. Opened July 1959 at 401 Center Brownwood, new office expanded by 1974, De Leon branch opened May 19, 1975. Evelyn Hare, branch manager, cites continued trust of customers.

Texas cities share November sales tax rebates announced

The state Comptroller reports November rebates totaling 19.8 million for Texas cities from the local option one percent sales tax. Yearly rebates exceed last year’s by about 42 million, bringing the total to 349.8 million. Individual city payments include De Leon 1651.93, Dublin 1531.30, Comanche 4639.71, German 601.08, Ranger 3691.89, Eastland 4671.41, Hamilton 2891.40, San Saba 4343.87, Rising Star 791.06, Cross Plains 1300.74, Goldthwaite 2058.04, Cisco 3732.56, and Early 1399.60.

Accident at De Leon Peanut Company Claims Life of Worker

A seventeen year old worker, Juan Ramirez Jr., died after falling into a peanut hull bin at De Leon Peanut Company. He was found missing at 6:20 p.m. and pronounced dead at 8:20 p.m. at De Leon Hospital. Autopsy cites suffocation. Services held Saturday at the Catholic Church in De Leon.
