Runaway gas well near Ranger lights up night sky

A gas and oil well south of Ranger blew on November 6 triggering a large fire tied to a pit burn that could be seen for miles. Residents report strong gas odors earlier as a cold front moved in and local readers note the situation now seems contained. In local news, Desdemona editor and longtime staff faced a confrontation with assistant coach Tim Lewelling who refused to sit and left the editor’s office after a heated exchange.

Communities To Be Recognized In Thursday's Sesquicentennial Program

The county wide Texas Sesquicentennial event takes place Thursday at 7 p.m. in the district courtroom. Winners in the coin logo contest receive silver coins, and the Comanche County Museum gets spurs by Carl Hall. Each 4th and 5th grader gets a coloring book, flags are given to 25 Independence Communities, and many local groups are to be acknowledged for their help.

Deputies Cite Overtime Limits In Missed Marijuana Bust

Comanche County deputies told the County Commissioners they missed a marijuana grow arrest due to overtime restrictions. About 130 plants five feet tall were under weeklong surveillance in southern Comanche County. harvest occurred after surveillance was halted at 10 p.m. Wednesday. Value estimated at $15,000. deputies work 171 hours in a five day period with overtime paid at half-time and requiring sheriff and commission approval.

Annual Performance Report Approved By School Board

The De Leon Board of Trustees approved an Annual Performance Report for the De Leon District covering the 1984-85 school year. The document, required by House Bill 72, assesses student performance, programs, staff, facilities, finances, and impacts of the 1964 Reform Legislature, with tests including the Texas Assessment of Basic Skills and the California Achievement Test. The on-file report and a summary note improvements, pupil-teacher ratios, dropouts, attendance, and per pupil expenditures.

De Leon Resident Remains In Jail After Attempted Capital Murder

Buford Deron Braswell, 25, remains jailed in Comanche County after a bond was refused on an attempted capital murder charge filed last Sunday in Justice of the Peace Jack Mathis precinct. The De Leon resident allegedly tried to stab De Leon Police Officer Kelly Ham during a disturbance at a local venue.

Priddy Wins $100 Football Contest in Closest Tie Breaker

Nelda Priddy wins the $100 top prize after two misses were the fewest by any contestant in last week's football contest. The tie breaker of total points in the Arkansas A M game gave Priddy 21 to the 16 points on the table, with several contestants missing two or three games. Chili Cook Off Winners Announced At Legion Event

The American Legion Smith Heath Post 471 held its first chili cook-off outside the Legion Hall on November 9. Eighteen cooks entered, with Garlan Bingham winning first prize Burl Lutz second and Gary and Tommy Burlison taking the worst chili award. Proceeds supported Legion activities.

De Leon Housing Authority unit disturbance ends with injury

Braswell sustained a personal safety related knife wound to the arm and received treatment at De Leon Hospital. He was released into the custody of Comanche County Sheriff’s Department officers who assisted De Leon Police Department at the scene.
