A Thursday night bonfire at Bear Cat Field fires up support for the football team with a 7 PM gathering. Friday at 2:45 PM features a pep rally in the High School Gym. Citizens are invited to back the Bears and attend related chili suppers and town events.
The Proctor Reservoir Weather Station releases a 24 hour report covering temperatures and moisture from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. The forecast provides observed conditions for the nearby area and outlines moisture readings and temperature changes.
The De Leon Bearcats travel to face Goldthwaite in a crucial 10-A district matchup. Goldthwaite, 6-2-1 overall and 3-0-1 in district, relies on QB Johnny Johnson and a veteran defense led by Gary Summy, while De Leon seeks a seventh consecutive win to secure the district title.
De Leon Bearcats stay undefeated in district play by defeating the Earry Longhorns 27 6. Kimmell rushes for 120 yards and three scores while Park adds 63 yards and a 30 yard pass to Kimmell. Aguero anchors defense with 19 tackles as De Leon clings to 5 0 district record.
Comanche County ASC urges all eligible farmers to vote in the December 1 election. Ballots go to voters by November 19, 1971 for three community committeemen and two alternates per community. County and community committees run local farm programs and determine allotments and cost-share approvals.
All peanut growers marketing peanuts in Comanche this year become participants in local and statewide quality contests. Local winners selected after harvest may advance to state level. State judging uses top dollar per ton and strict quality standards with penalties for defects. Local winners may be chosen on looser criteria. Gold Kist sponsors the local contest.
A national study shows rising auto ownership in Comanche County with 5670 cars in use, 129 per 100 families, and a 6.8 percent rise in registrations over five years. Retirement rate declines and service stations gain as income and car use grow.
The D H S girls basketball squad has 15 varsity players for 1971 72 with Effie Dobson and Becky Dossey among seniors. Coach Mary Clark says practice has been satisfactory and the team aims for the District 10 A Championship, inviting community support for their season.
Bobby Trick, freshman at De Leon High School, was perfect in this week's Free Press Football Contest except for four tie breaker points. Wayne Terry finished second, missing one game, with a year’s Free Press subscription prize.
The De Leon Chamber of Commerce calls for experienced garment workers and invites unskilled applicants to join the local effort. The De Leon Industrial Foundation seeks a firm with regional labor and building needs, while peanut growers enter quality contests with a grand prize trip to New Orleans. RC D program visits and a new Comanche County fire truck are noted.
