Gayle Wilkerson outlines FFA fruit orders and offers help from Bill Works of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department on deer pasture leasing and hunting site leads. He warns poachers are active at night and urges residents to post signs at property entrances to deter trespassing.
The FFA fruit sale continues with citrus fruits and apples available for order through November 14. Contact any FFA member to place orders. fruit will be delivered about December 3.
In this week’s Football Contest four entrants matched perfect scores. Shirley Sides and Earl McGill each guessed 41 points for the De Leon-Goldthwaite game, earning $4.00 prizes from the Free Press and sponsors. Charlie Morgan of Friona took $2.00 for third with 37 points, and C.T. Lawless also posted a perfect entry. Several contestants missed one game, including Myrtie Montague and others listed.
Comanche County 4-H Gold Star winners Cathy Bruton and Spencer Key were honored at a district banquet at Pecan Plantation Country Club on Monday night. Cathy, 16, with seven years in 4-H, and Spencer, also 16, with eight years, lead diverse projects and programs. Attending were their parents, Roy Newsom, Ronnie Robinson of the Electric Cooperative, and Judy Johnson who played piano.
Revival services run November 11 through 14 at First Baptist Church in De Leon. Evangelist Dr. Fred Meeks of Durant Oklahoma and music leader Marc Wilson of Crowley spearhead the event. Sunday worship is at 10 45 a m with all night services 7 30 p m Sunday through Wednesday. Noon luncheons are 11 45 to 12 45 Monday through Wednesday.
Twenty million Americans will hunt this season. Gowan Bonner of the Texas Safety Association notes that more hunters raise accident risk and urges adherence to ten rules of gun safety including treating every gun as loaded and keeping it unloaded when not in use, controlling muzzle direction, and avoiding alcohol. The aim is safer hunting and teaching younger generations responsibility.
Revival continues this week at Faith Chapel on the Old German Road with nightly services at 7 30 p m through Friday. Guest speaker is Rev Dean Johnson from Minnesota presenting messages each evening.
De Leon FFA sent several boys to the State Fair last week with notable finishes. Marlin Priddy captured Champion Poland China in the barrow show after purchasing the animal from William Fair. Johnny Kimmell showed a crossbred steer and Joey Mahan exhibited an Angus steer. Congratulations are due to Marlin and William for a job well done.
After studying enrollment figures, the University Interscholastic League updates districts. Key changes include reclassifying divisions from B to AAAAA, placing De Leon in 10-AA, and listing Cross Plains, Goldthwaite, Gorman in 7-A with others. Eastland Cisco stay in 10-AA with Bangs Early Dublin San Saba Ranger and De Leon. Comanche Ballinger Coleman Brady Sonora form 8-AAA.
Government offices banks and post offices will be closed Monday November 12 in observance of Veterans Day. The holiday honors war dead and veterans from all American wars with Armistice Day origins tied to Wilson 1919 and a name change to Veterans Day in 1954.
De Leon set the early tone with a ground drive score and Jimmy Lewis and Clynt Taylor each tallied twice as Goldthwaite beat De Leon 30-22. Walker added a 42 yard field goal and three extra points, with Ledbetter and Hale contributing on defense and Ledbetter grabbing two passes.
San Saba Armadillos, district 10 A leaders, visit De Leon to face the Bearcats Friday night. San Saba, after early losses, has surged in district play with wins over Goldthwaite and Cross Plains and strong showings from standout players such as Moses Cisneroz and Troy Hibler, returning 19 lettermen from last year’s team that reached regional play.
Harris Rating System designates San Saba as the 18 point favorite over De Leon this week. Dublin is a one point pick over Early, Bangs is favored by 8 over Cross Plains, and Goldthwaite leads Ranger by 22 points.
