Leon Bearcat B Team Clinches District Titles

Congratulations to J C s pe Leon Bearcat B team and Eighth Grade winners. Coaches Grady West and Larry Nabors praise hard work by non varsity squads. Harvest Festival supports a charitable cause and a Tiny Care Cen ter daycare project benefits the community. Pancake Supper tickets sell for 1.00. Red Cross Drive Opens This Week in De Leon

The De Leon area Red Cross drives open this week under area chairman. Local chapter reports 64 people helped for military personnel, 75 taught Standard First Aid, and 40 received Advanced First Aid. Summer swimming and lifesaving classes were offered at the De Leon pool. Training is free except for books. home service for military families remains free.

Bearcats Take District Lead With Victory Over Dublin

De Leon Bearcats moved top of the district with a 25-15 win over Dublin as Dublin and Goldthwaite tied. Kimmell rushed 124 yards, Aguero 115, Aguero and Almaguer scored and Almaguer added two extra points. Dublin coach Tolliver praised the effort despite the loss.

De Leon Faces Early In Key District Showdown

De Leon aims for a sixth straight win as it hosts Early or Friday night at 7 30. Early brings a 6 2 season mark with a strong passing game led by Lance Wackwell and solid ends David Watkins and Jack Williams. Coach Jack Waggoner says the Bearcats must pressure Wackwell to slow the balanced attack.

Junior Class Sponsors Halloween Coronation Queen Crowned

The 1971 78 Junior Class sponsored the Halloween Coronation with Meridith Smith named queen. Myron Adams MC and Ronnie Fritz presented roses. Meridith's court includes students from grades 1 through senior class. The event featured Gary Vaughn and Sherry Nowlin, a poetry reading, and a spook contest won by DeeDee Nowlin Jill Miller and Ben Carruth.

De Leon Halloween Carnival Raises Funds for Library

The Friends of the Library Club hosted a Halloween Carnival at the festival shed with decorated booths by grade levels. Prizes went to the eighth grade spook house, first, second, and third booths, and proceeds near 425 dollars will fund new library books for public and school libraries.

Book Fair Set for Nov 3 5 at High School

The Dr Leon High School Beta Club sponsors a student book fair from November 3 to 5 in the school foyer. Hours are 8 15 am to 3 15 pm daily. Proceeds fund sending members to the State Beta Convention.

Twenty Four Receive Library Certificates This Year

In 1970 state certificates were won by twenty four De Leone fans, but this year fifty local readers earned certificates. Reading twelve books on their own level during summer earns a Texas State Library Certificate. The young award winners are pictured in this weeks Free Press.

Football contest tie breaks reveal $8.50 winners

The Free Press Football contest tied with three players missing four games and scoring 40 in De Leon public game. Vickey Cogburn Winifred Stacy and Edgar Brinson win first prize of $8.50 each. Several others missed four or five games.

B-Team Clinches District Title In Win Over Ranger B-Squad

The De Leon Bearcat B Team claimed the district title with a 12-7 victory over Ranger B-squad on Thursday. Ricky Morgan set up the first score with a 55 yard run, Jimmy Cawood scored from the one, and a 35 yard pass from Scott Weaver to Morgan made it 12-0 at halftime. Ranger finally scored in the second half. Bearcat defense was led by Glen Boyd, Terry Ferguson, John Swint and Randy Bibby. The B Team stands 4-2 on the year and faces Gorman Thursday, with a November 11 finale versus Goldthwaite.

Local Telephone Co. Warns Obscene Caller

Roy D. Adams of The Comanche County Telephone Company warns that obscene calls are a felony and cites a Sweetwater case where a man was fined 3500 dollars. area abuse cases exist. residents urged to report to the telephone company and sheriff. A polarity trap traces callers using modern equipment.

Harvest Festival at De Leon United Methodist Church

The Harvest Festival is set for Saturday November 6 at De Leon City Hall as part of the Lord's Acre Lord's Hour program. Volunteers are urged to help with booths setup decor help booth chairs and barbecue tickets while supporting the Day Care Center project and United Fund slogan.
