Gayle Wilkerson reports Michelle Carr, DHS cheerleader, injured in practice Monday afternoon. She fell and rode arm on flag pole bar, requiring surgery Monday evening. Also notes De Leon moves to a new district with some games about 90 miles from home in 2008.
The Harris Rating System projects De Leon as a 13 point favorite over Hamilton Bulldogs this week. De Leon is ranked 90th in the state in Class AA with a 130 playing power, while Hamilton sits 139th at 117.
Last week's football contest saw Todd Whitehead as the sole perfect entry winner, earning $7.50. Christie Stewart placed second with one miss, while Nima Williams and Joe Snider tied for third to share the third place prize. Other participants missing one game included Hadley B. Scott, Tom Clayton, Clay Sharp, and Sherlean Frost.
The annual Harvest Festival is set for Saturday November 5 starting at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church. The event features a Christmas Store, Country Kitchen, Country Store, Kiddie Corner games, Pie Kitchen with meals, a 5 to 7 p.m. barbecue supper, and an auction at 7:00 p.m.
Mayor Doyle Smith of De Leon proclaims November 1983 as Chemical People Month joining state leaders in promoting a two part PBS program to fight youth drug and alcohol abuse. The proclamation urges citizens to view the broadcasts on November 2 and 9 and to participate in local action meetings.
De Leon Bearcats and Hamilton Bulldogs each hold a 3-1 district record as they clash at Bearcat Field Friday night at 7 30. The winner advances as district runner up to face Boyd in Class AA playoffs while Hamilton seeks to rebound after a 4 loss stretch.
The De Leon Free Press announces its sixth annual Big Buck Contest and third annual Turkey Contest starting November 12. Three deer trophies awarded: best overall points and spread, most points, largest spread. one turkey trophy for heaviest bird with beard length in a tie. Entries limited to whitetail from Comanche and nearby counties. Submit entries to the Free Press or call for details. winners announced after the season.
Texas voters will cast ballots on eleven constitutional amendments next Tuesday November 8. Polls open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. De Leon offers City Hall and High School as voting sites. Proposals include reducing JP and constable precincts in smaller counties and ensuring continuity of service when precinct lines change.
The Comanche County Junior Livestock Show validation day will be held Saturday November 5 from 8 00 a m to 12 00 noon All market except steers and breeding animals must be present to be validated County Agent Larry Cure said
Milly Sides, junior and daughter of Mr and Mrs Jimmy Sides, was named the 1983 Halloween Queen at a coronation in the high school auditorium. Her escort was Clay Dixon. Holly Burlison, 1982 queen, crowned the new queen and was escorted by Bryan Andress.
Dublin Lions upset De Leon 36-14 to clinch the District 12-AA crown. De Leon opened with a 6-0 lead on a 10-play drive capped by Shane Bunting. Dublin answered with a safety and later tied the game before halftime. McKillip led De Leon with 98 rushing yards, while Bunting added 69 on 17 carries.
Department of Public Safety officers will visit De Leon for driver license services one time in November on the second or fourth Thursday except Thanksgiving Day. The event aims to help residents obtain licenses with on site processing and assistance.
