Weekend recap highlights a close football game at Early and upcoming Friday night Bearcats district title bid for De Leon. Readers share fishing success and Halloween Carnival fun plus the Junior Queen Coronation crowd.
Ten entrants missed one game and prizes awarded by tie breaker. First place went to Katia Cook, second to Ricky Snider, and a four-way tie for third among Rocky Atchley Hadley Scott Joanne Hardin and Jim Terrill. Remaining one-miss competitors included Nina Leonard Nancy Thompson Jeff Weaver and David Glover.
Harris Rating System projects Bearcats to beat Bangs by 21. De Leon is ranked 33 at 119.6 with Bangs at 109. Other 10 A teams listed include Early 73, Dublin 148, Ranger 170, Goldthwaite 175, Cross Plains 203. Top ten state teams shown.
De Leon built a 26 7 lead, then Early Longhorns rallied to within 26 23. Wolfe led with 118 rushing yards while Powell added 44 and Sanders 10 tackles as the Bearcats held on.
Bangs dragons face De Leon in a district title showdown at Bearcat Field. Bangs tied with De Leon for the lead at four wins, four losses for Bangs, with 10 points per game, 8.7 allowed, while De Leon averages 23 points and 8.7 allowed. Kickoff 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Johnnie Reed moved to De Leon three years ago and, after divorce, depends on the Day Care Center to care for his two young daughters Cristie five and Candy one. He praises the center's affordable care and urban support, urging attendance at the festival on Saturday November 5 from 10:00 a.m. until the final auction item sells.
Between 400 and 425 people attended morning worship at the First Baptist Church in De Leon as the church celebrated its centennial anniversary. A Sunday School hour drew 341 attendees, followed by a noon meal and further anniversary activities.
The memorial service was led by Dr. D. D. Tidwell as the church marked its long history from a 1877 Morrison Community start to a 1954 rename to First Baptist Church. The south wing was completed in 1974 with construction beginning earlier and the 1969 main building phase noted. Pastor Billy C. Spencer leads the church.
A group of F and M Fair Ladies and guests traveled by charter to Dallas for the State Fair of Texas on October 22. Despite intermittent rain, attendees enjoyed the Trinidad and Tobago steel drum orchestra, Creative Arts, Kitchen Theatre, dancing fountains, new cars, and livestock exhibitions, culminating in Debbie Reynolds in Annie Get Your Gun.
Janet Clark was crowned Halloween Queen with Dawn Waggoner as first runner-up and escort Clay Scott. Becky Ward placed second runner-up with escort Mark Beaty while Terrie Wells led third runner-up with escort Jeff Rogers. Also listed are class representatives and winners in the Jack-o-Lantern contest and city entertainment details. A separate note reports a $250,000 Community Development Block Grant for De Leon for water and sewer lines and housing rehabilitation.
Mrs. Bill Lee and her daughter Mrs. Larry Haynie have opened Pastime Granny's offering art plaster art brushes and paints near De Leon on FM 587. Grand opening slated for Saturday November 5 with plans for art classes later. The Lees recently moved from Odessa and Brownfield respectively as Larry Haynie becomes Farm Bureau Insurance agent.
