Gayle Wilkerson notes Bruce McGinnis from Downing has published his first book. The column recalls their shared rural upbringing, church ties, and school history, ending with congratulations and a page continuation reference.
After winning their first district game, De Leon travels to Goldthwaite for a 7:30 p.m. Friday contest. Goldthwaite, 0-7 in 1979, has struggled in district play with losses to San Saba, Early, Bangs, and Dublin, while featuring stars like QB Ted Tucker and HB Tony Corona among others.
Ronda Krokum of the house of Mitchell, a junior at De Leon High School, was named the 1979 Queen of Halloween Saturday night. Coronation ceremonies were held at the high school auditorium. The queen's escort was Danny Thiebaud. Senior class queen candidate was Lisa Walker, escorted by Mark Beaty. Representing the sophomores were Tracie Barnes and Dale Collum. Freshmen representatives were Sue Joiner and Kent Parker. Additional class representatives listed for various grades.
In the 1979 session Texas lawmakers proposed twelve constitutional amendments for voter approval on November 6. Three address notary appointments, legislative review of agency rulemaking, and farm and ranch loan guarantees funded by state bonds. The notary amendment would set terms of four years, allow statewide appointment, and require residency.
The First United Methodist Church of De Leon hosts its annual Harvest Festival on Saturday November 5 at De Leon City Hall. Doors open 10:00 a.m. Underwood's will serve barbecue dinner from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. An auction of donated and homemade items starts at 7:00 p.m.
During the deer season the De Leon Free Press sponsors the second annual big buck contest. Three trophies will be awarded for best overall, most points, and largest spread with no duplicate winners. Entries from whitetail deer statewide are welcomed and photos will be printed. Winners announced after season end.
Four defendants in 220th District Court pled guilty on felony complaints. Edward Cox received five years in TDC probated with fines and restitution. Raul Perez pled to theft on a reduced charge with a $100 fine. Martin Baggs pled to aggravated assault with a year in jail, probated. John Daniel pled to exercising control over stolen property with a $100 fine. DA Lesley Vance led the state.
De Leon beats Ranger Bulldogs 39 to 0 as a dominant ground game and key plays fuel the blowout. Stephen Rice recovers in end zone for a early TD, Clynt Taylor and Edwin Hale connect on key passes, Ledbetter intercepts twice, Dennington directs a balanced attack for 361 total yards.
De Leon Police Department becomes headquarters for area emergency calls starting November 1, replacing De Leon Hospital. Key numbers are 893 2065 for all types, 893 5710 for police, and 893 2424 for fire.
The Future Farmers of America will again sell citrus fruit from the Rio Grande Valley and Fancy Red Delicious apples. Contact any FFA member to order. The sale runs through November 14 with delivery around December 3.
