Gayle Wilkerson offers graduation encouragement and reflections on the future. The note salutes the 1980 graduates, notes teachers Al Strasner Lurline Strasner and Wayne Chambers retirements, and thanks local merchants for supporting the senior edition of the De Leon Free Press.
Free admission splash day set for Thursday May 29 from 3:15 to 6:00 p.m. After that the De Leon pool will operate six days a week from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m.
A blood drive is scheduled for Tuesday June 17 from 11 00 a m to 6 00 p m at De Leon Hospital. For more information contact Debra Stephens at 893 2011.
Forty nine De Leon High School seniors will receive diplomas during graduation at First Baptist Church on Thursday May 29 at 8 00 p m Regina Fair will lead the processional and recessional and Al Strasner will sing The Lords Prayer Darrell Dossey will deliver the commencement address Al Strasner will present awards diplomas will be handed by Strasner principal James Perkins superintendent Forrest Eisenrich and board president Becky Ward valedictory speaker Becky is the daughter of Norman and Mrs Ward and has a 95 6 four year average Christi Keith salutatorian with 95 44 four year average earned academic awards and several Who's Who recognitions Mark Beaty is top boy with 93 82 average and leadership honors Other honor graduates include Julie Andress Janet Higginbottom Lisa Walker Donna Nowlin and Clynt Taylor.

The De Leon Chapter of the National Honor Society hosted a salad supper for inductees and parents at the Elementary Cafeteria on Monday night May 26. A candlelight ceremony inducted Kerry Miller Tracie Barnes John Dennington Haven Eisenrich Gayle Fite Steed Bobby Forrest Tammy Kimmell Charla Taylor Cindy Wilkerson and Rickey Wilson.
Pecan nut casebearers have started laying eggs in pecan trees in the West Cross Timbers area per County Extension Agent Floyd M Key. Field notes urge careful timing for spray programs between May 21 and May 27, with inspections urged to detect egg lays and nutlet damage. Insecticides listed include Gathion Malathion Thiodan Seven and Zolone, with label directions to be followed.
The USDA announced final rules to tailor school lunches to age groups starting next fall. Smaller portions for younger children and larger servings for older ones, plus increased bread servings and more eggs and dry beans as meat substitutes, aim to reduce waste and meet revised nutrition standards in the national lunch program.
