JCW's Ramblings notes Memorial Day observances on Monday May 31 with local merchants closing. It honors fallen servicemen and those serving in Vietnam and prisoners of war. An appeal by the F4M Rank urges support for POWs. Also mentions school vacation and upcoming pool season and swim lessons.
A local message promotes shopping in De Leon to boost taxes for schools and civic groups. It praises De Leon merchants, contrasts with Stephenville or Comanche, and thanks advertisers for the senior edition.
Mrs. Eula M. Weaver of De Leon is appointed Registrar for the Brown Comanche County draft board. Men 18 must register at City Hall 105 S Texas St De Leon 8 to 12 and 1 to 5 Monday through Friday.
De Leon merchants buy about 40 large urns to place in front of shops with green plantings cared for by each business. Womack’s provides the pots and plantings at wholesale price around 15 dollars. Ralph Duncan of the West Texas Chamber of Commerce advised on duties and local service as the Lake Proctor area attracts visitors for Memorial Day weekend.
The report notes many residents have quit smoking and others try. yet a large portion continues. Nationally 1970 saw a rise in per capita cigarette consumption, averaging about two extra packs annually. Light smokers and the elderly cut down while overall adult spending averages about $71 per year per smoker and $532,000 for the county.
Edward Brooks of Stephenville won the Championship Flight with a 172 total after four under par on the 45 medal holes at the Par Country Club invitational. Local players C M Caraway and Rodger Coan earned irons and woods respectively in late flights.
The 1971 Little League season starts Monday May 31 at 7 30 p m with seven teams instead of five as Gorman fields two squads named Gore man I and Gorman II. Double headers appear on Monday Thursday and Friday. official league names to be published next week.
The Comanche Jaycees will host the county Peanut Princess contest on July 10 at Comanche High School Auditorium. The winner goes to the state contest on August 14 in Eastland. Open to girls 17 to 21 as of August 13, 1971, sponsored by a county organization or business. Entry deadline June 30, 1971. Richard Whitenburg chairs. Judging includes bathing suits formats and talent.
Memorial Day falls on the last Monday in May, with observances Sunday and Monday including flag raisings and flower placing in De Leon and Arlington Cemetery. The holiday honors fallen service members, features parades, and the poppy symbol since 1922 adopted by the American Legion.
De Leon Municipal Hospital nurses completed a cardiac care training course run by Stephenville Hospital from April 20 to May 21. Sponsored by De Leon Hospital, nurses Doris Holt LVN Laverne Kennedy LVN and Mattie Bellepope RN earned commendable grades and received certificates at a May 8 1971 buffet dinner.
