The Free Press edition recaps the seniors last year and the choices ahead. It thanks area merchants for their ads and urges graduates to consider higher education marriage or employment. Coach Larry Nabors’ comments on the front page are urged for readers.
Van Zandt and Anderson lead a list of 37 seniors earning diplomas at Friday night baccalaureate exercises in the high school auditorium. Valedictorian Terri Van Zandt carries a 97.56 average and senior Dianne Anderson is salutatorian with 95.11. The group includes Bill Miller, Janet Mathis, Frances Lopez, Byron Smith, Joe Bob Huddleston, Kelley Lindley, and Daryl Ward among others with various honors and activities noted.
De Leon’s city pool will host splash day this Friday May 27 with free admission. Chan Priest returns as pool manager with lifeguards Rebecca Hale and Donna Nowlin. Regular hours run Tue Thu Fri Sat 2 to 8 pm Sun Wed 2 to 6 pm. closed Monday. Admission 50 cents. kiddie pool opens by late June at 25 cents. Pool has new paint and repairs completed.
A city walk-a-thon on May 30 at 9:00 a.m. from City Hall recruits ten teams of two to solicit donations for CF treatment. Contact Eula Weaver or donate to the fund at F and M Bank. Big people helping little people.
De Leon participants contested events with Tommy Cleere taking the overall trophy. Women’s and men’s top finishers included Lynn Jackson, Fran Donaldson, Judy Ditmore, Marney Wilkerson, Terry Nabors, Joanne Hardin, and Ronnie Frost among others.
The De Leon Elementary School playground will be reshaped and reseeded with Bermuda grass to improve runoff drainage. Wolfe Construction will install the irrigation system and topsoil at about $43,000, with RC D funded costs covering the project and school lender costs remaining.

Larry Nabors a De Leon teacher and coach since 1967 will become assistant coach at McCamey after this school year. His career included multiple district championships and a state football title with De Leon Bearcats, plus a long record as a basketball and football coach and a licensed lay minister.
The De Leon High School Baccalaureate exercises will be held in the High School Auditorium on Friday May 27 1977. Presentations include diplomas by Al Strasner and principal Al Strasner assisted by Superintendent James Perkins and School Board President Bob Huddleston. Class of 77 led by Mrs Garth Priddy will receive awards and honors.
Removal of concrete foundations from previously demolished buildings was conducted to enable the underground irrigation system and subsequent vegetation of the area.
