A reader reports a overturned rain gauge showing one inch but actual rain ranged from three to six inches around town. The piece notes the festival prize for the largest melon, a wedding in Abilene, and praises Mr. Lamb for leading summer baseball and the Cub Scout Circus. It also mentions potato yields, fertilizer use, and entertainment at the Drive-In Theatre.
Three De Leon youths graduate from Texas Technological College in Lubbock. Marlin Q Bond will be commissioned in the Signal Corps Saturday May 28 at Aggie Auditorium. James Norman Morgan and Bobby D Pell will receive B S degrees in Agriculture Monday May 30 at 8 p m in Jones Stadium. The Free Press joins friends in offering congratulations.
Notice states Dr P E Smith will be away from the office from May 30 through June 13. No further appointment details provided.
A singing event is planned at Rock Bluff on Sunday afternoon May 29 starting at 2 o clock. The public is invited to attend.
Barbara Schuman was named outstanding senior of the Wesley Foundation at a Denton banquet honoring senior students from North Texas State College and Texas State College for Women. She chaired the Christian Witness Commission and will become Erath County county home demonstration agent.
Round Grove held its annual homecoming last Sunday drawing many former residents and visitors from Dallas Fort Worth Brownwood Dublin Stephenville De Leon and other western and eastern communities. The event featured singing dinner on the ground and fellowship in the historic Baptist community founded by Rev Reubin Ross with Tip Ross of Gorman attending.
Rodney Ray Irby, son of Mr and Mrs C E Irby of De Leon, earns a Bachelor of Arts degree from Baylor University Waco. Commencement closes the 110th annual session with 595 graduates on Friday May 27 celebrations.
Bruce Clift a longtime Round Grove resident died in Dallas and was buried in De Leon Cemetery. Funeral services were held at Round Grove Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Ernest Rippetoe. Clift barbered in De Leon and Haskell then served as a justice of the peace before moving to Dallas to live with his daughter Miss Clara Clift. His wife Miss Rippette preceded him in death. Funeral arrangements were with Sharp Nabors Funeral Home.
The De Leon Public Library offers books about Davy Crockett for all ages. A statue honoring Crockett’s widow sits in Acton Texas, with directions from Fort Worth via 377. The statue depicts a pioneer woman with children, gazing for the hero who did not return from the Alamo. Grandson Ashley W. Crockett died in Granbury at 91, with other relatives still in the area.
De Leon saw another inch of rain Thursday morning around 5 o clock as L D Stewart measured. The storm produced heavy thunder and lightning with dark clouds overhead.
The New Mexico Conference met in Albuquerque last week and returned Kendall Bond as assistant pastor to Odessa First Methodist Church for another year. Bond is the son of Mr and Mrs R V Bond of De Leon.
Miss Ermilee Holdridge daughter of Mr and Mrs Lee Holdridge of De Leon will receive a Bachelor of Science degree from Texas Wesleyan College Fort Worth on Sunday May 29. Her many friends extend congratulations.
The De Leon High School Senior Class celebrated Friday night May 6 at City Auditorium with the Junior Senior Banquet themed Moonlight and Roses. Sophomores performed including a barbershop quartet and several solos while Rodney Spencer opened the program and J C Helm Jr of Stephenville spoke.
De Leon received a rare beneficial rainfall on Wednesday evening May 17 around 7 o clock. L D Stewart measured 2 9 inches in his rain gauge while Whit Sides reported 2 25 inches in Ebeneezer Community. West of town Bill Dendy logged five inches and F O Lutz noted heavy hail northwest of town causing some damage. Storm warnings prompted many residents to seek shelter in storm cellars amid widespread rejoicing.
Mrs. O. H. Moore has traveled to Fort Worth for a physical examination at Harris Memorial Hospital.
Mr and Mrs J H Vance have returned from a vacation and fishing expedition at Port Aransas and other Gulf spots. They visited relatives and friends and report good fishing with a large catch including king and speckled trout. Miss Jimmie Lois Hafford accompanied them on the trip.
A report on the Greens Creek Conservation District near Dublin outlines a new low cost water conservation approach. Five dams on tributaries will hold flood water and gradually release it, providing recreation and irrigation while avoiding large inundation and electricity plans.
Miss Bertha Ross left Thursday for Lubbock to attend commencement exercises for her great niece De Velva Bartlett of Lubbock High School. She will also attend the wedding of great nephew Charles Bartlett II. Bartlett grandchildren of Mr and Mrs Charles Bartlett Sr of Dallas. Miss Ross will visit her brother and wife Carl and wife in Lubbock.
Engle Appliance Center opens on Sipe Springs Road in the former E A Cook Grocery building. Owners Mr and Mrs A T Engle offer Maytag Frigidaire and Philco items and invite customers to visit. formal opening to be announced. The Engles, Methodist Church members, reside south of the Grammar School.
De Leon Cub Scout Pack No. 23 plans a Cub Scout Circus as the May Pack meeting. Friday evening May 27 at the baseball field east of the Grammar School, show starts 7 30 P M. Four Dens will run side shows and participate in Center Ring Show with concession stands. Parade at 5 00 P M. from James G. Tate’s home to the depot.
Stag Creek Community was named District winner in the 1954 55 Community Pasture Contest sponsored by WFAA and the Dallas Morning News and will receive 250 later. Soda Springs placed second with 150 and both communities gained currency for neighborly progress and improved community life.
The High School Auditorium was packed Tuesday evening May 24 as the graduating class of 1954 55 of 49 students received diplomas. Valedictorian Danny Donegan led with 96.42 average. salutatorians Jean Huddleston and Mackie Brumbelow each averaged 96.18. Presentations were by Superintendent Rowland Principal Irby and I C Donegan.
Comyn Baptist Church invites residents to a homecoming on the second Sunday in June after last year's decision to shift from the first Sunday due to Proctor Homecoming. A basket lunch on the church lawn at noon, Rev. Harley Hughes delivering the eleven o'clock message after Sunday school, and Mr. George Caraway leading the afternoon program are planned with singing and other activities of local interest.
Mr. and Mrs. Temple Terry of Dallas visited Mr. and Mrs. Jim Duncan Sunday afternoon and also spent time with his aunt and husband, Mr. and Mrs. O. M. Buchan.
