De Leon voters will decide on two school bond proposals on Saturday May 26. Proposition 1 requests 2 000 000 for repairs and additions to the district facilities including doors, classrooms, auditorium, gym, library and athletic upgrades. Proposition 2 asks 250 000 to build a new gym and a field house. If both pass, a 0.465 extra tax per 100 valuation will be levied. current rate is 1.07 per 100. Polls open 7 am to 7 pm. absentee voting ended May 22.

Ross Wilson of the Southwestern Peanut Growers Association warns that growers plans to contract additional peanuts in Texas and Oklahoma will drop sharply from 1978 levels. Gold Kist shifts contracting to the Southeast, while Birdsong Peanuts limits added purchases to about 50 percent of 1978 contracts. The combined effect points to a roughly 65 percent reduction in Southwest contracted tonnage, with growers paid about 93 percent of quota price and a $9 per ton freight fee. The Birdsong Peanuts manager in German notes higher freight costs for peanuts shipped from the Southwest to ports versus the Southeast. He reports no Southwest shelter has announced 1979 crop addition contracts. Planting of additional peanuts is likely to fall due to reduced contracted tonnage, urging growers not to plant more peanuts until sheller terms are firm.
Texas Electric Service Company filed a 16.1 percent systemwide revenue increase with the Public Utility Commission in Austin and city officials. The company cites inflation and fuel changes toward lignite and uranium, arguing higher base rates will keep prices lower overall. Residents face about a five dollar monthly rise for typical bills. Effective date likely next fall after reviews.
Fifty De Leon High School seniors will receive diplomas Friday night May 25 at First Baptist Church. The program starts at 8 00 p m.Valedictorian Robin Hood daughter of Mr and Mrs John Hood posted a 97 17 four year average. She is a Mighty Maroon band twirler four years USL district spelling winner 1978 homecoming queen editor of annual staff NHS academic award and office girl. She plans Tarleton State University.
David Walker, son of Ollie Walker, graduated as salutatorian with a 4 year average of 96.53. He captained the football team, earned all district honors, and made all state this year. He also competed in basketball and track, and participated in UIS literary events district and regional. Walker led NHS as president and senior class as vice president, plans mathematics at Texas Tech University.
Fourteen high school students will receive Academic Awards at Friday night’s graduation exercises. The De Leon Shakespeare Club sponsors the program with the school, based on a point system for academic achievement. Winners include Lloyd Eisenrich, Jana Cox, Irma Cisneroz, Ronald Powell, Rebecca Hale, Risa Duke, Randall Grimshaw, Peggy Dennington, Julia Andress, Mark Beaty, Janet Higginbottom, Donna Nowlin, Lisa Walker, Becky Ward, Bobby Forrest, and Cindy Wilkerson, with repeat recipients Robin Hood, David Walker, Cathy Bruton, and Robyn Donaldson. The $100 Academic Awards Scholarship will be announced, requiring four years of awards and three years in De Leon Schools.
