On Monday May 26 businesses in De Leon will close for Memorial Day while government offices banks and most retailers shutter operations. De Leon Schools hold classes. The holiday honors fallen soldiers and veterans from all wars tracing back to 1868 when General John A Logan named it Decoration Day.

Splash Day at De Leon Pool Opens May 29 Ad Free

The De Leon swimming pool will hold a free admission Splash Day on Thursday May 29 from 3 15 to 6 00 p m. Afterwards the pool opens six days a week from 2 00 to 6 00 p m with public admission set at 75 cents for all ages and 25 cents for the kiddie pool.

Private pool reservations and Tuesday bookings update

The pool will be reserved on Tuesday for private parties and Tuesday is already booked solid for the summer. Other reservations after 6 PM may be made by calling Sam Frasier at home 893-5785 or at the pool 2718 for reservation fee costs.

Texas Electric files for rate increase

Texas Electric Service Company on May 15 filed a request for a 17.7 percent systemwide revenue increase. Manager D R Armstrong of De Leon says inflation drives the higher costs of providing electric service. The filing, with cities served and the Public Utility Commission, seeks about $123 million more in revenues. Cont'd to Page 2.

Dudley Approved as Acting County Judge in Comanche

James H. Dudley, known as Jim, an attorney from Comanche, was approved by the Comanche County Commissioners Court last Monday to serve as acting county judge for up to thirty days or until the elected official returns to office. The move places Dudley in the interim post during a brief vacancy.

Dudley, former county attorney for four years, was temporarily appointed under Texas law that requires naming an attorney and bars the appointee from presiding over or serving as a temporary member of the Commissioners Court.

Bearcat and Kitten Athletes Celebrated at All Sports Banquet

De Leon Booster Club honored Bearcat and Kitten athletes at PAR Country Club on May 16. Charles Taylor chaired the event with Gordon Wood as speaker. Awards went to Tim Hare, John Ledbetter, Jimmy Lewis, Clynt Taylor, and Christi Keith among others across football basketball track golf and girls track.

Taxpayers Reminded Of Right To Appeal Property Values

The State Property Tax Board urges Texans to appeal property values before local boards of equalization. Executive Director Kenneth Graeber stresses the BOE as the main remedy to challenge assessed values, noting meetings typically run May through mid July and notices must be posted locally. The BOE can adjust values exceeding local market levels or those higher than similar properties, with discussions limited to property values.

De Leon to get five meter earth receive station

Tele- Communications, Inc. announces a new five meter earth receive station for De Leon to receive national and world TV programming via the Communications Space Satellite. The 17 foot diameter, 5000 pound dish will be installed on Route 2 and aimed at RCA Satcom I. Programs include The Christian Broadcasting Network, WTBS, C-SPAN, Calliope, and premium HBO. Local service will reach about 900 families through Community TV of De Leon.
