Town Talk highlights and community events in De Leon

Blood drive yields forty eight pints for West Texas Blood Services. All Sports Banquet honors DHS athletes with 245 attendees and West Texas State coach Bill Yung voice. Little League fundraiser at red light planned. Summer baseball for 150+ youths. high school bands receive ovation. Sousa award won by Byron Smith. Extension service notes pecan nut casebearer spray dates. Nine 1977 honor graduates average 90+ over four years.

Blood Drive Boosts De Leon Hospital Effort

A May 12 blood drive at De Leon Hospital in the old lobby collected 48 pints. West Texas Blood Services staffed eight hours with three technicians. co sponsored by the hospital and its auxiliary. Co chairs were Kerry Irvine and Debra Stephens. past president Eula Weaver supported the effort. Hospital staff and auxiliary members, student nurses, and donors from Senior High and local personnel donated blood. Several donors were deferred. elementary students created posters for the campaign.

Byron Smith Wins John Philip Sousa Award at Spring Concert

Byron Smith is named the John Philip Sousa Award recipient by the De Leon band at the spring concert. Don Halbrook, band director, thanks the audience for the standing ovation as Terri Van Zandt earns a separate award and Dianne Anderson receives a twirling honor.

De Leon Bands Present Spring Concert Highlights

The De Leon high school auditorium hosted a large audience for the annual spring concert. The program opened with the Star Spangled Banner and featured the Sixth Grade Beginners Band, the Junior High Band, the 1977 78 Mighty Maroon Band for next year, and this year’s Mighty Maroon Band. Eight seniors earned four year band certificates: Janet Mathis, Bruce Hodges, Terri Van Zandt, Brent Bush, Dianne Anderson, Roy Powell, Byron Smith, and Bill Miller.

Miss Wayne Forrest Serves as Librarian

Miss Wayne Forrest is now the librarian from 8:00 a.m. to noon at the De Leon Public Library. Mrs. Lucille Preston serves from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day. An additional librarian is provided through the CETA program via the West Texas Council of Governments.

It Is Still Too Early To Spray For Pecan Pests

The article notes timing is crucial to control pecan nut casebearer. Eggs appear on young nutlets, hatch in four to five days, larvae enter buds and nuts, with first generation causing most damage. Inspectors report no eggs yet. chemical sprays should occur between egg laying and larval entry. Tentative spray dates follow.

Bearcat and Kitten Athletes Honored at All Sports Banquet

De Leon Booster Club held the All Sports Banquet on May 14 at City Hall honoring DHS 1976-77 Bearcats and Kittens. Awards went to Toby Hare in track, Mark Davis in golf, Kelly Mitchell in girls basketball, Terri Van Zandt in girls track, and Steve Hallmark for basketball. Football medals were awarded to state finalist Bearcats with Toby Hare named Most Outstanding, Rocky Hardin Most Competitive, Andy Quinn Most Hustle, and Joe Bob Huddleston Sportsmanship. Bill Yung spoke at the event.

Little League Blockade Planned at Traffic Light

The Little League announces its annual blockade at the traffic light this Saturday May 21 to collect donations for athletic equipment. More than 150 boys and girls are enrolled in summer baseball and softball, with the Senior League also active.

Hare earns third in discus at state meet in Austin

Toby Hare of the De Leon Bearcats placed third in the discus at 157 feet 7 inches at the state meet in Austin. He also finished seventh in the shot put, continuing his standout track career as the son of Mr and Mrs Carroll Hare.

A May 30 walkathon in De Leon supports the Northeast Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Eula Weaver, chair of this year's Special Events Campaign, explains the goal is to raise awareness and fund research for CF and other chronic lung diseases.

1976 Traffic Deaths and Accidents in Comanche County

The Texas Department of Public Safety report shows Comanche County had three motor vehicle deaths in 1976 and 354 accidents with 106 injuries. Statewide figures cite 1,862 killed and 479 total accidents for the year, with 203 in Texas.

City sales tax rebate payments rise with year over year totals

The State Comptroller's office remitted monthly city sales tax rebate checks. De Leon received 2408.80 this period versus 795.02 last year. The 1977 payments to date total 15750.46 compared with 12471.66 a year ago.
