A local library in Texas faces closure amid budget shortfalls and plans to reorganize services. Officials cite financial pressures while patrons push for continued access and community programs.
James Vernon Ferguson, 18, son of Mr and Mrs W E Weatherly of Rising Star, drowned at Lake Proctor near Copperas Creek in Proctor Lake on Monday night. He was with companions Michael Clark and Faye Kinsey of Comanche. The body was recovered at 10 30 p m by Comanche Chief Charles Anders and De Leon dealer Jerry Davis. Rescue squads from Comanche De Leon and Dublin aided in the operation. Justice Ottis Fields ruled him dead at 10 50 p m. Billy Works of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department supervised the rescue. This was the sixth county fatality this year, already higher than last year.

John Salt a 1958 Borger High School graduate and Frank Phillips Junior College alumnus is honored as this week's Fireman of the Week. A longtime pipe fitter mechanic with an engineering background he has worked on instrumentation and startup tasks across plants in New York Kansas City Missouri Denver Connecticut Maryland Iowa and more. Now with National Valve and Manufacturing at Fort Phantom Power Station West Texas Units Abilene he pursues energy research in spare time. He and his wife Kayla settled in the area and attend Liberty Baptist Church. Salt has two years with the De Leon Volunteer Fire Department and serves on its screening committee.
Thirty eight Comanche County 4-H members took part in District 8 eliminations at Tarleton State University on Saturday April 23. Nine seniors and twenty five juniors qualified for state with seniors advancing to the State 4-H Roundup at Texas A and M June 7 8. The De Leon 4-H Club senior Share-The-Fun team won second with Mama Bear Papa Bear and Babaree Bear. members are Dee Dee Nowlin Jim Wilson Debra Reeves Rodger Coan Judy Johnson Pepper Joiner and Lisa Walker. Adult leaders are Linda Lindley Carol Nowlin and Charlene Bruton. The Senior Entomology team placed third. members are Donna Fields Ray Chapp Jeff Gray and Don Fields. Senior 4-H winners include Randy Abbey natural resources demonstration and Phyllis Riewe horse demonstration. Junior results include four first places one second one third. John and Karen Womack first with Daily Demonstration and Gustine Club first in Share-The-Fun with Yodeling Goat Herds. junior Entomology team took first in district. Rickey Wilson high point, Jackson Boen third high point, Dwain Morris also on the team. Contd to Page 2.
Tarleton State University judges chose Bearcat and Cubcat squads for next year after high school tryouts in the auditorium. Bearcat head for next year is senior Tracey Joiner with Sherry Kimmell as a senior representative and Liz Schuman as a junior. The sophomore is Donna Nowlin and freshman Donna Boen. Cubcat head for junior high is Cindy Wilkerson with eighth graders Mari Alvey and Charla Taylor and seventh graders Mica Waggoner and Sue Joiner.
The Mighty Maroon high school twirlers are Janet Higginbottom Gaytha Frost Julie Andress and Susan Tarrance with Robin Hood as alternates. Drum major is Jodean Miller. Junior high drum major Haven Eisenrich leads then Kathy Wright Sandy Moore Teresa Hanson and Cindy Matthews with Tammy Kimmel as alternate.
The annual spring band concert will be held Thursday May 12 at 7 30 p m in the High School Auditorium. The sixth grade beginners band the junior high band and the Mighty Maroon Band will perform. Admission is 1 00 for adults and 30 cents for students. A new Mighty Maroon Band selection will be presented. Awards will be handed out during the event.
The Senate Agriculture Committee passed the peanut section of the farm bill for 1978 to 1981. It features a two price system with poundage controls and a $420 per ton support floor for four years, with adjustments possible but not required. An attempted Bellmon Helms substitute failed 10 to 8, and the committee advanced the version with administration leadership.
Bearcat Toby Hare will compete in the state track meet after finishing second in both discus and shot put at the regional meet at Tarleton State University. Hare placed second in discus last year and aims for May 13 14 state events with marks of 147 8 in discus and 48 10 4 in shot. Joe Bob Huddleston led the year with a 15 01 0 hurdle time while Sig Wolfe Rocky Hardin and others also scored for the Bearcats who totaled 22 points to finish seventh.
Edith Short former director of Senior Citizen activities in De Leon and two year manager of the Senior Citizen Center is promoted to Field Supervisor for Green Thumb Inc. She will supervise a six county area where Green Thumb workers are located. The rural job program offers income limited work sponsored by the Farmers Union.
