Moore Press reports Pulitzer prizes awarded this week to writers in journalism fiction biography and reporting. William S. White son of Mrs J W White of De Leon won for biography for his life of Senator Taft. White was long a New York Times reporter and befriended Senator Taft, a friendship lasting until Taft’s death.
James William Chisum 49 a retired farmer and Erath County native died April 26 in a German hospital after a long illness. He lived in Stephenville eight years and was a Baptist. Surviving wife parents four brothers and four sisters and a nephew of Mrs J C Turpin of De Leon attended the funeral in Stephenville with burial in East End Cemetery Lingleville.

Soda Springs leads district eight with first place in the Rural Neighborhood Progress Contest. Judges John G. McHaney Mary Voss C. H. Clark praised all eight completed entries and the nine total submissions. Lavelle Black and two friends fished at Llano. Johnny Haynes replaced him at the Cafe during the trip.
Area IV results send two judging teams to the State Contests at Texas A M College on May 14. Livestock team members are Lynn J Whatley Billy Preston and Rodney Spencer with Walter Earl Dickie as alternate. Poultry team members are Neal Morris Autrey Andress and Joe Brownlee with James Thackerson as alternate. Meats judging team competes May 7 at Swift and Armany plants with Michael Cook Paul Ray Wilkerson and George Lawless. Alternate status explained.
The De Leon High School Band hosts its annual Spring Concert on May 10 at 8 p m in the High School Auditorium. The program features the Junior and Beginner Bands and includes marches overtures and light popular numbers. Admission is free as an appreciation for patrons. The band also competed in the Region II Inter scholastic League Music Competition at McMurray College April 30 where Bearcat Band earned Division III in concert and sight reading. Robert Campbell won Division IV for a cornet solo. two clarinet trios earned Division IV. a sax quartet won Division II.
The Free Press reports Secretary of Agriculture Benson authorized a seven and one half percent increase in all 1955 peanut allotments. The move responds to drouth area pleas led by Mr. Burleson and Mr. Poage, who seek temporary added acreage and potential expansion to 150 percent under certain drought criteria. Congress also retained peanuts on the basic commodity list by 215 to 193, aiding further relief for growers.
Funeral services for George Richard Daniell were held at 2 30 p m Thursday April 28 at the Downing Methodist Church with Rev J D Smoot of Comanche officiating assisted by Rev E W Holt and R Neil Greer. Daniell a Comanche County resident for 53 years died Tuesday April 26 of a heart attack aged 74 Born in Rosston Arkansas August 30 1880 Married to Marguerite Lightfoot July 23 1911 Survivors include his wife one brother F T Daniell of De Leon Active pallbearers were Ernest Mull Gayle McGinnis Rex McGinnis A L McCrary and A A Locke Honorary pallbearers included Robert Howard Dois Mull W C McClesky J P Yates Jim Wilkerson Loyd Page Music by a quartet and piano. Funeral arrangements were by Higginboham Funeral Directors.
William Louis Fendly Boyd 88 dies Thursday April 28 in De Leon hospital. Funeral services Friday at 3 PM at First Baptist De Leon with interment in De Leon Cemetery. Survived by three daughters Lola Hollingworth Noradoyle Pittman Grace Ferrell one grandson and two great grandchildren.
Mrs. O. M. Scott of Comanche died Tuesday morning after a period of illness. She was the mother of Mrs. Richard Stevens and grandmother of Mrs. Bonnie Hood and Mrs. Geneva Nabors of De Leon. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Higginbotham Funeral Home in Comanche.
The Cub Scouts plan a Super Circus featuring a street parade with a band, cages of wild animals, and all the usual acts. Real lemonade peanuts and popcorn will be served. Date to be announced. watch the Free Press for details.
De Leon starred in a 13 inning 3 to 2 Granbury win as Bearcats tie for first with the Pirates. Earlier Granbury beat Stephenville 8 to 5, leaving De Leon poised to clinch a league crown if Cisco loses Tuesday.
Montie Wayne Stewart of Huckabay High School won the county FFA Tractor Operator contest held May 3 in Dublin. Four area participants competed under judges R K Vaughn J L Riker and W R Heizer. Stewart advances to a district contest before June 13 with state finals in Houston July 19, where a new Ford tractor will be awarded.
The Duke and Ayres sale Saturday drew long lines with shoppers waiting at least 45 minutes before opening. Local Manager Lee Furtick and officials praised the crowd and the event’s success, noting the store stayed crowded through ten o'clock and that an annual sale is planned.
The P-TA will meet in the High School Auditorium on Thursday May 12 at 3 15 PM. New officers to be installed include President Gaston Campbell Vice President Al Strassner Secretary Cecil Short and Treasurer Ray Harvey. Miss Roger Mae Smith named speaker urged attendance by all members.
Announcement this week lists Bearcat captains for the next season Jim Golden center George Christie guard and Autrey Stevens end letters earned by returning letter men all will be seniors.
Tarleton State College hosted Parents Day with turnout from across the state. Miss Frances Mote of Vernon was crowned Parents Day Queen, following her recent Military Ball Queen honor from Tarleton ROTC. Outstanding students were recognized during the program.
Mr and Mrs Virgil Haile of Baird and Mrs Casper of Rising Star spent Sunday with Mr and Mrs H S Hansford.
De Leon patrons learn that Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Jefferies operate Jefferies Food Market while Mr. and Mrs. Derrell Isbell run Bearcat Grill in Fort Worth and Nelson Warren becomes manager at Sinclair Station. Ads appear in this issue with more details promised next week.
