The Texas Water Commission will hold adjudicatory hearings on water rights in the Upper Leon River segment of the Brazos watershed beginning 2 00 p m July 23 at De Leon City Hall Auditorium. Participants with surface water rights must file forms by July 16 and attend hearings to preserve claims.
Claimants seeking water adjudication must prove actual legal use of water for periods 1963 1967 or 1963 1970 for sworn statements, and filing a Section 11.307 claim is required before individual hearings. Non exempt irrigation use alone does not grant a water right. request forms by writing the Executive Director's Office, Texas Department.
The governor proclaims May 1979 as Older Texans Month to honor and involve Texas seniors. More than 1.6 million mature Texans are celebrated for past contributions and encouraged to stay active in community life. signature dated April 5, 1979.
The Texas Highway Patrol investigated nineteen rural traffic accidents in Comanche County during March 1979. These accidents caused no deaths and nine injuries. For the year to date, Comanche County has 45 rural accidents with two deaths and 29 injuries.
The De Leon Independent School District held a special meeting on April 30 to set a bond election for Saturday May 26. Voters will decide on Proposition 1 and Proposition 2, funding up to 2 million dollars for additions and improvements and 250 thousand for a new high school with indoor physical education facilities.
Basil Brownlee, 76, longtime De Leon resident, remains active at Burlison's Gulf station and previously ran Holdridge's Grocery and City Market. A deacon and 51-year Assembly of God member, he credits Christian living for his health and stout work ethic. He and wife Rachel have four children and enjoy church and 65 Club trips.
The Corps station at Lake Proctor reports April 1979 rainfall at 2.49 inches, lifting the year to 13.81 inches. The thirteen year average for January through March is 8.53 inches, making 1979 over five inches above average. January through April totals and all weekly rainfall are listed with daily highs and lows for late April.
The De Leon Booster Club will host its All Sports Banquet on Saturday May 5 1979 at 8 30 pm at PAR Country Club. All De Leon High School athletes will be recognized and coaching staff will present awards. Guest speaker Harold Mayo HPU football head coach is noted for coaching success and Texas connections.

Last Wednesday try outs selected head cheerleader Donna Nowlin and senior Becky Ward for De Leon high school. Junior high picks include Vickie Higginbottom head, with eighth graders Holly Burlison and Rhonda Donaldson and seventh graders Lana Keith and Christi Shupp among others.
Kindergarten screening for pre registered students will occur Tuesday and Wednesday May 8 and 9 in the south wing of the First Baptist Church. Children who are five before September 1 are eligible. Unregistered parents should visit De Leon Elementary with birth certificate and immunisation record.
Tim Hare of the Bearcat track team finished second in both the shot put and discus at the Region II-A meet in Stephenville and will compete in the state meet May 11-12. His shot put distance was 51 feet 6 inches and discus 156 feet 6 inches. John Ledbetter placed fourth in the 880 yard dash with a season best 2:01.6.
