Gayle Wilkerson notes most candidates for hospital or school board and city council have stopped by for photos and comments to inform voters before the election. A Friday forum at the Women's Division Reunion Center on Highway 6 will feature brief candidate summaries and a Q&A session. De Leon won the district title at the U S Literary Meet, beating the runner up by a wide margin.
Highpoint Park will reopen around May 1 after being closed since October 1, 1982. Area residents submitted petitions to keep the park open, and city officials indicated a tentative resumption of normal operations pending final approvals.
De Leon Schools swept both divisions of the District 12 AA University Interscholastic League Literary Meet held last week. In the high school division De Leon won with 290 1/6 points, followed by Hico Dublin Millsap Hamilton Ranger in order. The top three high school placers advance to the regional competition with De Leon earning top positions in events such as Informative Speaking Local Director Vivian Menzel-J. Douglas.
Five De Leon players earned 12-AA All-District honors with several unanimous selections. The girls feature Katy Jackson and Jill Scott among top picks, while boys include Michael Butler and Rodney Hardin.
The De Leon Hospital Auxiliary sponsors a blood drive on April 7 at De Leon High School Auditorium. San Angelo Blood Service personnel will collect donations from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. The drive supports the hospital’s blood supply. Community members are urged to donate a pint of blood no substitutes exist.
The De Leon Church of Christ at Highway 6 and Navarro will hold a Gospel series from April 4 to 8 at 7 30 p m each night. Dale Scott of Albany Church of Christ will lead the meetings with Mike Mefford of De Leon as song leader.
The Women's Division of the Chamber of Commerce sponsors a Candidates Forum on Friday April 1 at 7:30 p.m. at Reunion Center Highway 6 near Festival Grounds. Candidates for De Leon School Board Hospital Board and City Council will present views for voter guidance. questions follow. Contact Mrs Ruby Park at 893-2083 by noon April 1 to participate.
De Leon Schools will observe a three day Easter break with Friday as a Teacher Work Day and Monday designated as an Easter holiday. Classes will dismiss Thursday at 2 15 p m and resume Tuesday at 8 05 a m.
The newly formed Lions Club in De Leon will hold its Charter Banquet on Thursday March 31 at 7 00 p m in City Hall. Representative Charles Stenholm will speak and a cake auction will follow the event.
Voters on April 2 decide vacancies on the De Leon Independent School District Board the De Leon Hospital District Board and the De Leon City Council. Nine seek three school board seats three seek three city council posts and four seek hospital board seats. Incumbents Morris Sides and Lennard Caraway terms expire with other returning members noted.
