Town Talk notes storms flood area and election reminders

Rain over the weekend caused river flooding and fence repairs for area residents. Voters will choose two city council members three school board members and three hospital board members this Saturday. April 1 midnight is the license plate sticker deadline. The Seniors volleyball tournament raised funds for their trip with photos of winning teams inside.

Pancake Breakfast Kickoff for Scout Drive in De Leon

The Lions Club and Chamber of Commerce sponsor a Friday April 8 breakfast at City Hall at 7 00 a m to launch a sustaining membership drive for De Leon Scouting. Marshall E Bruce, District Executive, Boy Scouts of America, Comanche Trail Council attends. Wayne Chambers chairs the drive seeking 2400 for the council area eight central Texas counties.

City To Apply For Second HUD Grant

De Leon plans a second application to HUD for 1977 Community Development Block Grant funds. Approval from the West Texas Council of Governments was obtained for the first grant. A hearing on April 1 at 4 00 p m at city offices will discuss the application which totals 250000 for street sewer bridges and housing rehabilitation with possible full or partial funding.

Easter Egg Hunt Sponsored by Women’s Division

The Women’s Division of the Chamber of Commerce sponsors a Saturday Easter Egg Hunt on April 2 at 2 00 PM for children aged one through nine with prize eggs. The event is hosted annually by the chamber division.

Revival planned at First Christian Church De Leon

Mike Abbott of the Christian Church of Mound City Missouri will be guest speaker and singer for April 3 6 revival services at First Christian Church De Leon. Services start 10 30 a m and 7 p m nightly with special music and a singspiration Monday at 6 p m. Ron and Linda Brown assist in the special singing.

Bill Smith Fireman of the Week in De Leon

The Free Press profiles Bill Smith as De Leon fireman of the week. A 1963 De Leon High School graduate, he later became a mortician, worked with Nabors Funeral Home, then formed the Smith Chapman Flying Service with Keith Chapman, totaling about 2000 flight hours.

City offers 1977 sticker deadline and plates

April 1 at midnight marks the cutoff for displaying 1977 vehicle stickers on plates. License plate strips are available at City Hall throughout March.

Gooden Transferred to Fort Worth After Accident

Johnny Gooden was hospitalized in Harris Hospital Fort Worth after an accident at Golden Oak Milling Company last Friday. He stepped on an unsecured cover and fell into an auger, severing his leg below the knee. He was operated on at De Leon Hospital then transferred to Fort Worth for further care. Gooden had long worked for Golden Oak Milling.

Gospel Meeting Set At Church Of Christ In De Leon

The De Leon Church of Christ announces a Gospel Meeting from April 4 to 10 with Evangelist D. L. Ashley of Albany Texas. Three Day Revival at De Leon Methodist Church

The Reverend Jack Riley of Brownwood will headline a three day revival at the De Leon First United Methodist Church from Sunday April 3 to Wednesday April 6. Services Sunday are 11:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Weekday services are 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Reverend Dick Jenkins of Waco leads songs. Nursery is available for evening services. Donuts and coffee served at morning services to fit early schedules. Everyone is invited.

Proctor Lake Rises After Heavy Rains

The Corps of Engineers reports Proctor Lake rose more than seven feet after weekend rains. Rainfall measurements show 4.25 inches at the lake and higher local totals in De Leon. Lake level reached 1167.70 at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday, above the 1160.06 reading before the storms, with inflow continuing and releases normal. Flooding damaged roads bridges and fences across the area as the lake rises toward the Leon inflow.

On March 23, De Leon High's Consumer Education class toured Floyd West and Company in Dallas with 24 participants. Two groups visited nine floors, heard talks from multiple departments, and enjoyed lunch, then stopped at St. Paul Insurance in Arlington before returning.
