Odd Fellows Lodge Meets Awaiting Dallas Convention

Odfellows De Leon IOOF Lodge No. 175 meets Thursdays at 8 pm with all members urged to attend and visitors invited. The lodge mourns the passing of Stan ly Moreland a 24 year member. Brasuell notes Grand Lodge in Corpus Christi and Rebekah branch meeting there. Dallas will host the 14th of April convention as De Leon prepares to welcome the association.

Band Parents Thank Donors For Bearcat Band Uniform Fund

The Band Parents thank local business people for donations to fund new Bearcat Band uniforms. The drive continues next week due to a small funds shortage, and a total amount plus donors will be listed in The Free Press.

Major Poynter Receives Crown's Cross of Honor

Major Vernon L. Poynter of Fort Hood Texas flew to New Orleans last week to receive the Crown's Cross of Honor, an officer title in the Order of Orange Nassau, by royal decree of Queen Juliana. He earned the award for meritorious service as head of the helicopter rescue unit during the 1953 Holland floods. The ceremony occurred at the International Trade Mart. He is the son in law of Mr and Mrs Lee Gooch of De Leon.

Mrs Callan Undergoes Surgery in Dallas

Mrs. Van Callan of Irving daughter of Frank Holland underwent surgery Tuesday in Dallas at the Methodist Hospital. Mrs. Callan is the former Miss Vivian Holland. Mrs. Kate Ramsey of Gorman and Mrs. Billye White left immediately to be with their sister.

Area Navy Man In Coast Exercises Aboard Destroyer

Lonnie E. Kilgore Boilerman First Class USN son of Mr and Mrs Elbert Kilgore of Sidney Texas and husband of Mrs Debbie S Kilgore of Lemon Grove California is taking part in Operation Surfboard along the West Coast. The March 14 30 training involves 50 Pacific Fleet ships 6000 man Army second Infantry Division and 12000 Navy personnel aboard 27 amphibious ships carriers Philippine Sea and Badoeng Strait cruiser St Paul eight destroyers submarines and other craft. Vice Admiral W K Phillips will direct the Navy phase with Rear Admiral A E Jarrell commanding the amphibious task force. The maneuver includes antisubmarine warfare tests coordinated live explosives at San Clemente Island and San Simeon landings harbor defense exercises in San Diego and air defense and mine warfare drills.

Red Cross Lifesaving Course Taught Since 1914

The first Red Cross sponsored swimming and life saving course was given in 1914. Since then over 9,300,000 persons have been instructed in water safety.

Local Soldier in Training Participates in Exercise Roundup

Edmond L. Carlile 26 son of Mr and Mrs Bird L Carlile Rt 1 De Leon Texas recently took part in Exercise Roundup an Army training maneuver in Austria. The week long drill featured attacks by an Aggressor Force of British soldiers and US troops evacuated the area to test mobility. Carlile a 1946 De Leon High School graduate is an assistant shop foreman with the 7676th Ordnance Depot Company. He joined the Army in June 1953 arriving overseas in February last year.

Airman Stanley Visiting Parents Before Transfer

Airman Melvin R. Stanley formerly of Lackland AFB visits his parents Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Stanley. He will be transferred to Francis E. Warren AFB in Cheyenne Wyoming and depart for the new assignment on April 7.

Pancake Supper a Huge Success for De Leon Lions Club

The De Leon Lions Club hosted Aunt Jemima Pancake Supper on Friday night March 25 drawing an estimated 375 attendees despite bad weather. The club thanked Quaker Oats of Sherman Texas and local grocers for cooperation and all contributors. An all day singing Get Together will be Easter Sunday April 10 at Sand Hill with Memorial Talk by Ben Stephenson of Lubbock and a basket lunch. The Che Leon Valley Protective Association meets at City Hall Saturday April 9 at 8 00 PM open to the public.

Comanche County aims to raise 2500 to support disaster relief nationwide. The drive notes three World War II era completions and urges residents to donate, stressing aid reaches all in need and highlighting Friday, April 1 as Our Day with Mrs. J. H. Vance as City Chairman.

De Leon plans a city wide clean-up Friday April 8 with most businesses and schools closed to support a community project. Supt K H Rowland asks residents to curb trash and place can containers by curb for pickup by city trucks next week. Epsilon Sigma chapter sponsors the effort to keep De Leon clean and healthy.

Loyd Hitt of Comanche attends the General Motors Training Center in Garland for a Fisher Body Course focusing on advanced automotive service techniques. He is a Smith Motors service manager for two years and aims to benefit local Buick customers with improved service methods. Thomas Elijah Bingham died Sunday March 27 at De Leon Hospital. Born October 12, 1870 in Comanche County he was 84 years 5 months 14 days old. He married Laura Fenwick and had six sons Emmett David Ocie Bing ham Robert Alfie Archie and a daughter Iva McLean sixteen grandchildren nine great grandchildren three brothers and three sisters. Funeral at Sandhill Church with Rev. G H Horton officiating. Interment Sand Hill Cemetery.
